Yisa Braimoh Celebrates Philip Shaibu at 51

By The9jaTrend

Every 1st of December is special to Hon. Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State. He spares little or nothing to celebrate the day, considering his spectacular profile as one of the best politically-exposed persons in Edo state today. Even if he chooses not to mark it, his coterie of associates, friends and well wishers would prefer to roll out the drums to celebrate the life of a young political turk and generalissimo whose stature bestrides Edo North in particular and Edo State in general , like that of a colossus.

This year's birthday would certainly be different from the rest in view of the fact that the celebrant is ordained, having secured re-election as the deputy governor of Edo State, in a landslide victory along with his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, in the September 19th Edo gubernatorial poll .

Over the years, Comrade Phillip Shaibu has shown exceptional courage and commitment to the cause of uplifting the society, a cause to which he remains steadfastly unshaken, though some say he's militant in his approach and pursuit.

The University of Jos in Plateau State in the North Central zone of the country, one of the hotbeds of student radicalism, served as the building blocks for his later years of political activism. He shot into national limelight as Welfare Secretary of the University's Students' Union Government, SUG, and later became the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, in 2000.

Brimming with high octane doses of activism, Hon Shaibu's first attempt at breaking into political limelight , suffered a temporal setback in 2003 when he lost out at the polls as candidate of the ANPP  for the Edo State House of Assembly seat to represent Etsako West Cnstituency II.

In 2007, he bounced back into reckoning and, as they say, the rest is history. With two successful tenures in the 4th and 5th Edo State House of Assembly, representing Etsako West Constituency II, he held various sensitive positions including Minority Whip, Majority Leader and  chaired the all-important house committee on Rules, Business and Ethics. He was for about a year , a member of the House of Representatives representing Etsako Federal Constituency when he was drafted to pair with his principal, Gov Godwin Obaseki, in the 2016 Edo governorship race , as deputy governor candidate of the APC.

The birthday celebration of this enigma would certainly upstage any other event on December 1. Friends, family members, associates and well wishers would set the state agog with their congratulatory and goodwill messages to celebrate the life of a comrade, a warrior , a compassionate and astute politician. Hon Phillip Shaibu is, indeed, a man of many parts , conquests and holdings . His life trajectory fits perfectly into the description of the brave and fearless warrior who, as vividly described in the popular Yoruba folklore: Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irumole' by famous author D. O. Fagunwa, went to the land of the 'dead' and came back unscathed.

As the drums roll out in celebration of  an acclaimed political bridge builder and enigma, it is apt to let his numerous admirers know that the best way to honour him is by rallying round with all the support and solidarity he needs , to take Edo north to the next level.

The Owan clan and the PDP political families in Owan East and Owan West local government areas of Edo State are fully committed  to firmly holding the ladder for Comrade Phillip Shaibu to climb to greater heights.

Stop Accepting Fossil Fuel Projects by European Countries - ERA/FOEN, 4 Others Advocate

By The9jaTrend

.                   Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo
      Executive Director of Environmental
    Rights Action/Friends of Earth Nigeria

The Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of Earth Nigeria, Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo, has called on African governments to stop the acceptance of fossil fuel projects driven by European countries via their Export Credit Agencies (ECAs).

In a press briefing on behalf of ERA/FoEN, Friends of Earth-Ghana, Abibiman Foundation-Ghana, Environment Governance Institute-Uganda and Friends of Earth-Togo in cooperation with Milieudefensie/Friends of Earth-Netherland and Both ENDS, Dr. Uyi Ojo stated, "In Nigeria's oil fields, oil spills and gas flaring have resulted to massive environmental degradation and marine resources depletion which local people depend on for livelihoods.

"The locals have continued to blame especially Shell Oil Company, and the Nigerian government for their impoverishment and human rights violations.

"To ensure improved clean energy access, there is the need for a post-petroleum economy devoid of oil and gas and embracing renewable energy sources to reduce carbon footprints and address climate change impact", he said.

The other environmental rights group from Africa who joined in the research analyzed the prospects of a Just Energy Transition for Africa. They also analyzed the question as to what best solution is for limiting global warming to 1.5C on the one hand, and facilitating universal energy access on the other hand.

The groups also analysed the question of what role public financial institutions like ECAs could play in terms of promoting a green energy future in Nigeria and other developing countries.

Niels Hazekamp of Both ENDS, kicked against Export Credit Agencies, who he said provide insurances and guarantees to companies doing business abroad.

"Export Credit Agencies provide insurances and guarantees to companies doing business abroad. Despite  international climate agreements and national climate ambitions, Export Credit Agencies continue to support fossil energy projects on a large scale," he opined.

In a lecture delivered by Barr. Nosa Tokunbor, legal adviser, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria,  emphasised that the only way out is the phasing out of finances for fossil fuel while channelling same to support renewable energy project.

     Legal Adviser, Environmental Rights
         Action/Friends of Earth Nigeria

"The only way out is the phasing out of finances for fossil fuel while channeling same to support renewable energy projects."

On her part, Isabelle Geuskens of Milieudefensie/Friends of the Earth Netherlands, laments, "That in a world that is increasingly switching to renewable energy, the demand for fossil fuel is unsustainable and bound to decrease drastically."

The report also revealed that, "In spite of the Paris Agreement to cut back on carbon emissions, the rich countries insured dirty energy projects with a total value of 11 Billion US Dollars through their export credit agencies (ECAs).

"ECAs insured energy projects in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Uganda with a total insured value of approximately 18 Billion USD in the period between January 2013 and August 2020.

"The available data shows that only 1% of the total support to the energy sector consisted of support for renewable energy, in the form of solar projects. No ECA support for wind projects in the four African countries has been found.

"More than half of this export support is related to fossil fuels. Only 1% went to sustainable renewable energy," the groups added.

.         Dr. Francus Ilenloa Igberaese
                 with the award plague

Dr. Francis Ilenloa Igberaese, Secretary, Nigerian Economic Society, (NES), Edo State Chapter has bagged the "2020 Man of Honour and Integrity Award" organised by BA Global Consult, a Nigeria-based Non-Governmental Organisation in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

It was a day the Economist and Lecturer, shared awards with notable personalities and organizations across Nigeria. Among the awardees are, Edo State PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, the General Manager, ITV, Benin, Nigeria, Elder Ogbeide Uhunwonse, former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly,  Rt. Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, Comrade Osunde Osaigbovo Massy, Galaxy TV Correspondence, Edo State, Chief Patrick Eholor, amongst others.

Speaking after receiving the award,  Dr. Igberaese thanked the organisers for the honour done him and promised to abide by those principles of integrity, which necessitated the organisers to single him for the honour.

The Edo State NES Secretary pointed out: "The last time I accepted an award was in 2012, when I emerged the Best Track Paper Presenter in a Conference in University of London. I had earlier just received one in 2011, in a conference in Bangkok, Thailand. The last time before those was in 1998, when I emerged the Best Corps Member (Corper) of the year in Delta State.

"Ever since, I have received many nominations for awards and fellowships but I turned them down because I didn't believe that any of them followed any  objective criteria. I wholeheartedly accepted yours because I believe it does and that I deserve it," he added.

Dr. Igberaese emphasised,  "Not many friends and colleagues in the University understand me; they see me as so odd, uneccesarily punishing myself because of my behaviour. I have suffered much in the hands of the politicians, despite all my efforts because of my resolve to abide by my principles of honour and integrity.

"The latest was the disappointment from the former Speaker of EDHA, which could have broken anybody's heart (but not just me) simply because I refused to conspire with him against the people or because I was bold enough to tell the truth to power. Everybody, especially in Uromi still talk about it and it has become a parable in the land.

"How you, the organizers of this award spotted me out to receive an award with such notable personalities and organizations when I do not think that I am yet a name that rings bell beats my imaginations. It tells me to continuously abide by my principles and that there is hope," he opined.

Hon. Sergius Ogun Rehabilitates Ewohimi Water Scheme, Extends Project to Ewatto, Ohordua

By The9jaTrend

.           Hon. (Barr) Sergius Ogun
                National Assembly

Hon. Sergius Ogun, member, National Assembly representing Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency, has facilitated the rehabilitation of Ewohimi Water Scheme which was abandoned for many years by successive administrations.

Following his intervention, the rehabilitation of the mega rural water facility which began two years ago is at the verge of completion.

Hon. Ogun has successfully influenced the federal government to earmark the sum of One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000) in the 2021 National Budget to ensure the extension of the water scheme to Ewatto and Ohordua.
You we recall that the Hon Ogun, in his first term worked round the clock to ensure the completion of the Northern Esan Water Scheme. The federal government project which has been completed and handed over to Edo state government is expected to commence the supply of water to residents of Ugboha, Uromi and environs any moment from now.

There is no doubt that when these two water projects commenced the supply of water to residents, the perennial challenge of acute paucity of hygiene water which has rattled the people of Agbazilo for several decades would be confined to the dung pit of history.

By The9jaTrend

Chief Johnson Atseleghe on                    Traditional White Attire Emerging
                       from the Court

The case against 8 accused persons for the murder of Mr. Sunny Etchie, the Okhaigbele of Kolokolo Community in Ologbo Dukedom, Ikpoba Okhai local government area of Edo state came up today, the 19th day of November, 2020 at Criminal Court 4, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The Accused Persons took  turns to take their pleas at the dock following rejection of their motion to stall proceedings or outright dismissal of the case.

The 8 accused persons include the main suspect who is the Iyatsere of Warri, Chief Johnson Atseleghe, Oluwa Esimijie - 38, Ayokotse Robinson - 54,  Mofe Samuel - 40, Felicia Otikpere (female) - 55 Ayuwa Mofe - 65, Nosa Omoregie - 54 and Benjamin Erewa - 39.

Lead Counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ighedosa Imadegbelo , leading, Bamidele Abina and O. T. Okeke had argued a motion where he prayed the court to discountenance the entire hearing and dismiss the charges pending when the investigation of the case by the office of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Adamu Mohammed which has taken over the case is completed. This was before the 8 accused persons took their pleas.

Ighedosa Imadegbelo SAN, who based his arguments on Section 215 and 167 Subsection D of the Police Act, and quoting amongst others, Justice Uwaifo on Gani Faweyehimi Vs. the IGP & Abidoye, Page 23, Okuruakpor Vs. The State said, "it was completely wrong to arrest a suspect and arraign same before the police look for evidence to do so."

He added, "the investigation from the IGP's Office has agreed that the statements of 5 of the accused persons  were obtained under severe duress while some of the complainants and  witnesses especially one Darlington Origboye who were invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja have since disappeared into thin Air.

"The Prosecution Police Officers submitted to their Offices reports with grave inconsistencies, whereas the one submitted on the 27/06/2020 acknowledged that investigations were completed, the report submitted on the 29/06/2020 stated contrarily that the reverse was the case", he observed.

Imadegbelo SAN, added,  "besides the main suspect, Chief Johnson Atseleghe was not even interrogated in the documents submitted to them, while the documents were not also signed."

He said in Fulani Vs. The State, an unsigned document or statement can not be tendered in a competent court of jurisdiction.

Imadegbelo said, "further investigation has revealed that preliminary findings by the Prosecutions Officers are unable to establish whether the purported deceased Okaighele, Sunny Eichie is actually dead or alive and that previous cases as in DPP Vs. Uti recommended that all parties must wait for a mandatory 7 years to declare his death or otherwise status."

The SAN consequently raised two issues which he said firstly bothered on Jurisdictional abuse of court process asking the court to dismiss the case so that the DPP can go and put their house in order and secondly, that the court can not work on Spurious Evidence.

In her Counter Motion, the State Counsel, Ewemade E Osasu asked the court to sustain the hearing  in the case as the laws of Nigeria does not permit the police to ascertain whether statements are obtained under duress or not but the courts.

Barrister Ewemade E Osasu explained, "what the DPP is saying is fresh evidence and can always be added to the existing ones, demise  of  the deceased, Okaighele is not in contention as prima facie case has long been established against the accused persons particularly the main suspect, Chief Johnson Atseleghe who was in constant communication with the deceased  from when he was kidnapped until he was murdered, which is a circumstantial evidence."

"All they are asking is for the accused persons to come and defend or explain their roles in the murder of Sunny Etchie and urged the court to take the pleas of the accused persons who were all present in court."

In his ruling, the Presiding Judge, His Lordship. Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele struck out the Motion by the defendants and asked them to enter into the dock  to take their pleas.

When the charges which bothered on 4  count charge of wilful damage of Property,  conspiracy, kidnapping and murder of Sunny Etchie, the Okhaigele of Kolokolo Community, the accused persons all pleaded not guilty.

His Lordship, Justice Ovbiagele consequently adjourned sitting to  27/1/2021 and 03/02/2021 respectively for continuous hearing.

You will recall that in the Suit No.  B/CO/717M/20, the offences of the Accused Persons contravene Sections 324  of he Constitution,  punishable under  the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004, and Section 2 (2) and punishable under Section 3 of the Kingnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2013 of Edo State.

When The9jaTrend approached the Legal Team of the Accused Persons, they refused interview, but Barrister  Mathew Edeghese, leading E E Idahosa who are holding brief for the Complainants, told Journalists that the court had agreed for the Accused Persons to take their Pleas without further delay reflects that justice will be served at the end of the day.

I'll Make Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu A Collective One Rather Than Individual - Dr. Agbonile

By The9jaTrend

The Medical Director of Edo Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City, Dr. Imafidon Osama Agbonile has said that the major challenges faced by the hospital is the dual complexes which is a big task for the management in view of the dwindling economic raveging Nigeria as a country and the world at large, but promised to make the hospital's rebuilding efforts as a collective one rather than individual.

"The hospital's management is saddled with the onerous task of running a dual complexes with its attendant duplicity in waste management, disposal bills, overhead expenditures and others."
Dr. Agbonile revealed this during a chat with The9jaTrend on the challenges being faced by the hospital and his plans of making it a referral point among other hospitals of similar nature across the world.

He noted, "the idea of a dual complexes grew out of the fact that the original site of the hospital at Uselu, which started as a clinic at inception, could no longer cope with patients' traffic and staff."

He stressed that the construction work on the new site, which is meant to serve as permanent site, has been ongoing for over 10 years with its appreciable number of structures on ground to show for the level of government commitment to its completion.

According to Dr. Agbonile, "the permanent site is presently being put into effective use pending the completion of construction works and final movement of the main shell of the  hospital.
"We are on a tight rope as things stand. Running a dual site means double overheads on virtually every area of hospital management. Very soon, we are hopeful that we would streamline our costs and make some savings once the hospital moves to its permanent site," the M.D. said.

Public Service Reforms, Arts, Tourism, Others Are My Priorities - Gov. Obasek

…as British Museum Donates $4m for ‘EMOWAA’ Project

By The9jaTrend

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has reassured Edo people that his administration will deploy technology and employ younger professionals into the state’s civil service to drive inclusive development and ensure a sustainable future for the state.

Mr. Obaseki disclosed this during the 4th edition of the Alaghodaro Investment Summit, held in Benin City. He stressed that his administration is committed to restoring Edo State as the arts and cultural capital of Nigeria in his quest to Making Edo Great Again (MEGA).
The governor also unveiled plans for the Edo Museum of West African Arts (EMOWAA) and the establishment of the Legacy Restoration Trust, which is to manage the $4million donated by the British Museum for the project.

Obaseki assured Edo people that he would focus on developing the state and restoring its heritage.
He noted: “COVID-19 was a game changer as the world will never remain the same again. Over one million people died across the globe with less than 65,000 deaths recorded in Nigeria.

“It is only an organised society that can respond to the challenges thrown at it by the fallout from the pandemic. I assure Edo people that my administration will never lament about the virus but provide a way out for Edo people to overcome the challenges.”
Obaseki added, “In the next four years, we will build institutions rather than individuals. We will focus on the economy, deepen social development, strengthen healthcare, build Infrastructure, drive environmental sustainability and leverage Arts and Culture for tourism development.”

The governor, who frowned at the breakdown of bureaucracy in Nigeria, reiterated his administration’s commitment to recreate bureaucracy and make it work for the progress of Edo State.
"In the next four years, we will create a world-class public service and the institutions we need to drive government reforms in the State. We would deploy technology to achieve this.

On the historic projects his administration will be embarking on in the next four years, he said, “We will undertake archaeological restorations as there are so much in Benin that have not been discovered.

“We thank the British Museum that has made a donation of $4 million for the archaeological projects, which will involve urban regeneration and renewal initiatives. This will enable us to create a unique experience for visitors to attract people to enjoy our state and see our great reforms.
He added: "We have established an independent trust called the Legacy Restoration Trust, which is important because large sums of money will be raised. The Trust will manage the funds raised. Investors want to see transparency and clarity on how the money raised is spent. The Trust will comprise representatives of local, national and international institutions.

“We have begun work with the British Museum and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to scope the work to be done, especially the archaeological work and research around these historic sites.”

On his part, Ighodaro noted: “The Alaghodaro Summit enables the public sector in Edo to engage with private sector leaders, civil society and traditional rulers on the best way to make the state an economic power.
“The summit provides an opportunity to expose the potentialities of our state and the vast resources we have made to the rest of the world.”

“All our previous three summits have produced strong, articulated recommendations to support the government in its development agenda. The Alaghodaro summit is now one of the best attended the summit in Nigeria because of the impact of its implemented recommendation,” he opined.

Present at the event are Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu; Chairman, Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Tony Aziegbemi; Chairman 2020 Alaghodaro, Mr. Asue Ighodaro; former Secretary to the Edo State Government, Barr.
