FG Names Two Railway Stations After 2 Edo North Personalities

By Dada AYOKHAI

The wind of renaming popular railway stations after prominent Nigerian citizens, which is sweeping across the country, has alsoberthed in Edo North.

The federal government had in recent times embarked on a spree of renaming popular railway stations after some prominent Nigerians.

In the latest list released by the federal government, two prominent Edo North citizens made the list. They are late Admiral Mike okhai Akhigbe and Gen George Agbasika Innih.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Transport, Hon Rotimi Amechi, in a release made available to the public by the ministry's Director of Press, Mr Eric Ojekwe.

Both selected men, Admiral Akhigbe and Gen Innih, were military officers from Etsako extraction of Edo North.

While Gen Innih had the Agenebode station named after him, the railway village, Agbor was named after Admiral Akhigbe.

Late Admiral Mike Akhigbe hailed from Fugar in Etsako Central and served as the military governor of Lagos State. He later rose to become the Chief of General Staff, CGS, the equivalent of vice president in our current dispensation.

Late Akhigbe was a titled chief in Avianwu clan and also shared the singular honour of birthing democracy in the country, along with his boss, Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar (retd), in 1999. He died in October 2013.

In the case of late Gen George Agbaziaka Innih who hailed from Agenebode in Etsako East, he was a former military governor of old Kwara and Bendel States respectively. He retired from the Nigeria Army as a major -General, died in August 2002.

The federal government seems committed to completing the abandoned rail network in the country.
