Oba Ewuare II dissociates the Benin Palace from a video by one Eranomigho Edegbe

By Simeon Osajie
The Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba Ewuare 11 has disowned a video currently trending on social media by one Eranomigho Edegbe which hurled inventives and insults on President Muhammadu Buhari just as he reiterated his deep love for the former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Alliu Oshiomhole.

In a statement signed by Mr. Frank Irabor, the Secretary of Benin Traditional Council (BTC), the Oba vehemently denied authorizing the video by Edegbe, insisting that the said video and the contents therein were neither commissioned nor was it encouraged by the the monarch.

Irabor said: "our revered royal father, Ova Ewuare II condemned in the strongest terms the malicious attacks on the integrity of President Buhari and all other persons whom the video seeks to malign.

"We wish to state unequivocally that our love for Mr. President is unparalleled as the relationship shared data back to the days of His Royal Majesty, Oba Erediauwa (of blessed memory), the immediate past Oba of Benin. This relationship was further strengthened when Mr. President headed the President Trust Fund (PTF)."

The Omo N'Oba stated that Oshiomhole has always respected not just the traditional institutions in Edo State, but also the Palace of the Oba of Benin, adding that his affection by Oba Erediauwa who adopted the immediate past chairman of APC as a son is well known and was reinforced during his tenure as governor of Edo State.

He said: "We were happy to convene a send-forth for him upon the expiration of his two terms, where His Royal Majesty used the Ada (traditional sword) of the ancestors to pray for his protection, a thing quite rare in Benin custom. We are glad that the prayers said on him continue to be efficacious in all his endeavours."

The monarch also tackled Eranomigho Edegbe over his utterances against a businessman, Captain Hosa Okunbo noting that he is an illustrious son of the Palace of the Oba who at all times has worked in support of the monarch.

The statement added: "These utterances and behaviour of Eranomigho and his cohorts show that they are not happy and comfortable with the cordial relationship between the Palace of the Oba of Benin and the Presidency.

"Further more, it shows that some disgruntled elements like Eranomigho have deep animosity against Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Captain Hosa Okunbor."

THE OSHIOMHOLE'S HUMILITY: As We All Deceive Ourselves.

Francis Ilenloa Igberaese, Ph.D

I didn't have the opportunity to watch the full press briefing by the immediate former Chairman of APC, Adam Oshiomole. I only watched an excerpt of it on my WhatsApp and Facebook pages. But I could imagine what he meant to say, or what he actually said that was never pronounced by him. I could understand his pains and the bitter pins that he had to swallow.

His supporters, who I envy for believing in drowning with the man who made them what they are (Professional Politicians at their prime ages), will be quick to say that he is already what he is; chairman or no chairman. Then, I asked one of them why he so much battled for the chairman as if his life depended on it.

Oftentimes, it is difficult defending the undefendable but as it is, Oshiomole's supporters, like their master, will always find words, even the words from the thinking only befitting primary school pupils. All they are understandably waiting for now is the possible coming of Ize-Iyamu as governor, as if the Pastor himself is not aware that Oshiomole is his major political undoing; so that should he actually becomes governor, putting Oshiomole to where he belongs would be his priority. Let me not assume anything anyway, because Oshiomole has reduced the Pastor's reputation and chances of winning elections. But I know that I was the first to predict an unresolvable dispute between Obaseki and Oshiomole early enough in 2016.

Back to the subject matter; did Oshiomole actually mean he is still loyal to President Buhari in all of this? Who would? That is just like what Ola Rotimi of blessed memory called "the friendship between the goat and the cocoyam" and the great writer had asked: "If the crocodile can eat its own eggs, what will it not do to the eggs of the lizard?" And I add; has Oshiomole not realized too late that the bird does not fly according to the width of the sky?

I heard him referring to himself as a member of APC. That was the same way he ignored his suspension. Isn't that a big lie, at least for now? Obaseki is obviously more sincere to himself by resigning from a party that didn't want him any longer. I do not mean by Oshiomole but by the President himself, and that is self worth. Oshiomole should understand, or his think tank should know that the President had long decided that if Obaseki and Oshiomole were the problems, and since they could not settle themselves, both of them should be done away with for peace to reign in the party. After all, the macro-stability of the party is worth the trade off of its micro benefits. That is to say that the President cares less about Edo. Didn't he win in 2019 even when he lost Edo? What now makes Edo a flag point when he doesn't really have anything at stake any longer? The only APC state in the South-South? Story for the gods. If you don't me, I would ask you why didn't the NEC of the party invoke its power to intervene in Oshiomole's suspension, as they did in ratifying Ize-Iyamu?

Now, I hate it when someone refuses to see when he has become irrelevant. Oshiomole should know that the President had only tolerated him (Oshiomole) on the advice that he was needed (I mean his mouth) for the 2019 election. That usefulness has long expired, especially when the "stock price" of APC has lost great value (depreciated) under a bad "Managing Director".

Well, Obaseki is still the governor even though APC no longer wants him. Who is Oshiomole now? His supporters would say a Leader, as if that is one of the offices he so much desires, as if Obaseki too is not also a Leader, as if I am not also a Leader.

Oshiomole should have tested strength with the President. We would have watched Part 3 of the whole episode. I wish then, that his Advisers had advised him like this from the beginning.

CALL DAN ORBIH TO ORDER - South-South Youths warns

The South-South Youths Vanguard of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged the PDP governors forum of the PDP to caution the former Chairman of Edo state chapter of PDP, Dan Orbih.

The PDP Youths said that the warning became imperative following the alleged negative roles Orbih has been playing since Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State joined the PDP.

The Youth Vanguard noted that the alleged roles are inimical to the success of PDP in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The PDP Youth Vanguard, in a statement by its National Chairman, James Efe Akpofure, further urged the PDP governors not to allow the personal interest of Orbih to undermine the chances of PDP in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State.

The Vanguard pointed out that with Obaseki as the flagbearer, the PDP has a wider chance of winning the state in the forthcoming election.

The youths added: "We are aware that the interest of Orbih is to become the deputy governor to Ogbeide Ihama, he is not a better material compare to the like of Obaseki/Philip Shuaibu. This is the chance PDP has been waiting for. Orbih should not use his personal interest to spoil it for us.

“We are telling our governors to caution Orbih not to do anything that will jeopardize this our golden opportunity. We are telling the governors also to caution the like of Orbih and any other person that will want to destroy this opportunity.

“This is not the time to play spoiler. This is the time for us to strategize so that we can achieve the opportunity we have been looking for. Orbih and his like should not use their personal interest to let this opportunity to slip out of our fingers. A stich in time save nine.”

Meanwhile, one of the PDP governorship aspirant, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide Ihama has instituted an order asking the Port Harcourt High Court to restrain  governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in PDP primary election scheduled for June 25, 2020 because the governor did not purchase PDP Form or undergo screening within the time-table schedule.

By Simeon Osajie

I will secure my victory; the people’s victory, we will win on Thursday Friday, we will win very very big, we will win very very big, we will win very very big and it is going to be the people’s victory. For sixteen years I have being in the struggle, I was beaten my rain, I was beaten by sun, I had challenges, I encountered armed robbers on my way during campaign, I had accident that almost took my life, my vehicle summersaulted, I lost my armored car, all in the struggle of try democracy in Edo State, all the struggle to make sure Edo smile when I become governor of the state and with God on my side, I am still alive. I have being sharing rice to every home, every family across Edo State in the past sixteen years.”

I paid medical bills for those that could not pay their bills in the hospitals like UBTH and other hospitals. To God’s glory, I was able to show love to my neighourbour. Now we are set for victory, someone who joined the party less than 72 hours will come to take the ticket of the party. It is not acceptable. I now ask, where our conscience is. You want me to submit my labour for sixteen in vain. Never. That will not happen in this state. For sixteen years, I received shame and received disappointment. God bless my wife, Kate Imansuangbon for standing by me, God bless her tremendously. I remember visiting the late Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Oba Erediuwa with my kids when they were small, that is over sixteen years now and you mean those sixteen years don’t count. That’s not going to happen. It is unacceptable.”

You jump from APC under 72 hours and you want to get automatic ticket from the party (PDP) I labored for. Never will allow this to happen, it will be over my dead body, it will not happen. Enough is enough. I am ready to die for this course. We must stop this political hooliganism that people will come to chase you out. The party leaders are prevailing on me to step down for Obaseki who joined the party less than 72 hours. This will not happen. What will I tell my students whom I sometimes teach government in my school? This is a big shame to this country.” Barr. Imansuangbon added.

Not only do I believe that rape can be totally eradicated in the state, the government of Godwin Obaseki is committed to ensuring there is total eradication of rape culture in this state, and to ensure that all rapists get their judgement and given the punishment that they deserved. We are doing all we can to make sure that this becomes a reality”, she added

Reacting to falsehood being peddled on social media that Omozuwa Vera Uwaila (UNIBEN 200L student that was recently raped and murdered) was impregnated by her pastor before setting her up, the Commissioner said the claim was not only false but misleading, stressing that autopsy carried out on Uwa shows she was not pregnant and was also a virgin.

“We were all terribly shocked to what happened to Uwa. It was terrible; it was a brutal experience. We were further shocked by different things we saw on social media, and that is why it is important we come here."

Speaking to journalists, Roseline Okosun, Chairperson, Edo Women’s Development Initiatives, expressed worry at the increasing rate of rape in the nation, just as she expressed fear that mothers, children no longer safe in the nation.

“I grew up here in Edo and I have not heard it this bad before that fathers, young boys are raping our daughters in the universities and down to primary school. I don’t know the curse that has been placed on our land”, she lamented.

Speaking on behalf of the Christian Women Organization, Lady Esther Obinyan (LKJSI) called on the governments to address the delicate issue from the root.

"We can no longer leave our children especially the girl child alone at home. Despite the issue of rape and sexual harassment which has eaten deep into our society there is limited awareness on the subject in our environment. I think government should create and target programs inclined towards the curbing or elimination of sexual crimes in our society," she appealed.

Receiving the protesters to the premises of the NUJ, Sir Roland Osakue, Chairman Edo State NUJ disclosed that journalists are against rape and are ready to provide all the necessary support so as to put an end to the menace.

THE OSHIOMHOLE IN ALL OF US

By Francis Ilenloa Igberaese, Ph.D

Who is the intellectual that didn't know even right from 2016 that it wasn't possible for Oshiomole and Obaseki to be friends for so long? Who doesn't know that the way of the educated person is always a threat to the uneducated or a half baked?

At is it in Robert Glen's 48 Laws of Power, Obaseki has outshined his master; in performance and in building harmonious living across the Edo State, resulting to Oshiomole's anger.

Obaseki doesn't even know how he had offended Oshiomole after helping him to realize his ambition to be the National Chairman of their party, the APC. He unknowingly started a war against Oshiomole when he started courting a race he (Oshiomole) hates so passionately that he would wipe them out of Edo, if he has his way. Upon handing over in November 2016, Oshiomole expected that he would become the new and undisputed godfather. He didn't expect that Obaseki would not wait for his directives or permission before he would do anything, even as a governor, let undoing anything he has done. He expected that Obaseki should inherit his enemies in the Esan people. He expected that as he had done, Obaseki should capitalize on the seemingly historical rivalries between two brothers; the Binis and Esans, to intimidate the Esan people. In short, he expected that Obaseki should help complete his ambition by finally wiping away the Esan people.

The trouble really started, even if Oshiomole couldn't speak out then, when Obaseki finally reinstated the Oshiomole's suspended Onojie of Uromi. And to worsen the situation, Obaseki declared Chief Anenih's burial a state burial and participated actively in all the activities. Many says Anenih himself had forgiven Oshiomole for all the insult. Anenih could have actually done so but he had no power to solely forgive evil done to the entire land.

Just then, Obaseki made inroads and became a darling to the Esan people and had remained so since then, especially with the return of the Speakership position of the state Assembly to Esanland, which was the last thing Oshiomole wanted. Oshiomole, like many of us would do, began to jealous this Obaseki, since there was nothing he didn't do in vain to conquer the Esan people. How could Obaseki have pretended so well to be his friend, he thought. How could Obaseki's name be so sweet smelling in Esanland and his an "Abacha" sort of a thing?

It wasn't long that the Edo People's Movement (EPM) came and Oshiomole easily found a ready group to tell the governor that he had broken the Calabash of oil and that it was time to pay him back. EPM themselves didn't even realize this because all  that concerned them was get Obaseki our and free the treasury.

If baseki had not shown the Esan people some soft spots, if Obaseki had suspended more Enijie in Esanland, if Obaseki had not tarred roads on Ekpoma, if Obaseki had continued his trend of gradual abandonment of Ambrose Alli University, if Obaseki had finally dethroned the Onojie of Uromi, if Obaseki has not brought the Speakership position to Esanland or patronize the Esan people who Oshiomole had strategized to rot away, if Obaseki had not shown that the Binis and the Esans are brothers and indeed, Edo people are one and that there is no need to continuosly inherit historical rivalry the present generations know little or nothing about, Oshiomole wouldn't have fought Obaseki, no matter what anybody had told him, and EPM wouldn't have blossomed.

In trying to get at a good man, Obaseki, for coming to the aid of an oppressed race, Oshiomole forgot (if he had ever heard) that "those who do know the limits to which an innocent enemy is persecuted would always be driven to pay a huge price".

Today, Obaseki is still the governor of Edo State; let's for now leave second term out and Oshiomole is a former National Chairman, sorry, a suspended National Chairman (as his boys would want us to call him) of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Obaseki is today the new bride of all and I won't be surprise if  all the political parties come out to endorse him as their sole candidate for the Edo 2020 election. Oshiomole is for now not even a member of any political party and I doubt if any other political party would willingly accept him. He could head for Correctional Center (as they now call the place) "if", sorry "when" Obaseki succeeds in his second term bid (which by my estimation is 90% sure because you can only rig an election when the wining margin is narrow), except the spirit of forgiveness comes to envelope the governor. That would mean that he would not even have a peaceful retirement like that of Odigie Oyegun who he believes he had overthrown.

This Oshiomole's attitude or expectation that  until our subordinates inherit our innocent enemies, they are not loyal is in all of us. And if we do not learn lessons from his present travails, we shall all "likewise perish" in our hatred of a good man.

HOW GOV. GODWIN OBASEKI AND HIS DEPUTY, PHILLIP SHAIBU RECEIVES PDP MEMBERSHIP CARD

By Simeon Osajie
It was a hip of activities at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Edo State Secretariat along 1st East Circular Road, Benin City when the government of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu finally joined the party.
The PDP faithfuls alongside supporters of Governor Godwin Obaseki were chanting solidarity songs waiting for the arrival of the his excellency thereby differed the social distancing in view of the covid 19 pandemic ravaging the country that allowed 20 persons to assemble in any gathering.
When Godwin Obaseki finally landed 2.15pm, the crowd was overwhelming thereby forcing personal aides of the governor to delay their principal disengaging from the official vehicle.
The official defection of Obaseki to the PDP and the formal receipt of the leadership of the party in the state led by Dr. Tony Aiziegbemi in the party secretariat have put to rest the widespread speculation of the governor defection.
The Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aiziegbemi welcomed governor Obaseki to the party and assured him that, “going by the party constitution, PDP governor in any state of the federation is regarded as the Leader of the Party and will henceforth be treated as such.
The governor was thereafter given the party register to append his name and signature. The Oredo Ward 3 Chairman was then called upon to hand over the PDP membership card to Governor Obaseki.
Responding after receiving his PDP membership card, Governor Obaseki emphasized that “I have officially joined the party to advance my ambition to seek re-election as governor of Edo State. I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state. With the energy I witnessed in the party secretariat on my arrival, what Edo people has witnessed in terms of human and capital development in the past four years will be a child’s play compared to what is to come. The bore in development and democratic practice both in party and governance in Edo State in particular and Nigeria in general would be as never been witnessed.”
On the governor entourage were serving commissioners, APC chieftains loyal to the governor, Kabiru Adjoto, immediate past speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, among others.
In another development, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu was also at the PDP Secretariat to formally decamp to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Receiving the deputy governor to the PDP Secretariat was the Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aiziegbemin and his executive members.
Dr. Aiziegbemin introduced the deputy governor to the executive members of the State PDP and thereafter invited the deputy governor to explain the reason behind his visit to the state headquarters of the party.
In his response, the deputy governor was emphatic that “since the governor had joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and we his followers have decided that wherever he goes we will go. For me, it is only customary to come and formalize into PDP. I am here to officially put my signature of my membership to the PDP. I want to thanks all of you and the Edo people and by the grace of God, we can assure them that those good things that we have stated; that this PDP vehicle we are intending to use we will also use it to continue those projects Mr. Governor has started,” the deputy governor concluded.
The deputy governor’s ward chairman from his local government area was thereafter called upon to hand over the PDP membership card to Comrade Phillip Shaibu that witnessed thunderous crowd response.
Responding to question from journalists, deputy said that “actually, it is means feeling that I am joining PDP. First you struggle to form a party and after forming the party, those that benefitting from the party that you formed took over the party and become tyrant. It is not very easy to abandon that vehicle that you helped to formed and nurtured because one individual became the king in the system and become undemocratic.”
“And for some of us, we believe in the people and we cannot abandon the state for people like that, and that is while we decided to join the Democratic Party, which is PDP for the purpose to continuing the developmental strides of Governor Godwin Obaseki. We decided that were governors goes, that is where we are going. I am excited that the Governor said we have to try the People’s Democratic Party to actually the vision of Edo people.”
”Some of the faces I am seeing today were those faces that were hard to crack. Coming together with these faces and work in one accord, I think the sky will not just be our limit but will be our starting point.” I am happy to associate myself with the PDP family,” Comrade shaibu concluded.

"Obaseki, by providence, has created a mass movement for liberation of Edo people, says group* ... throws weight behind gov’s second term bid"

By Simeon Osajie

An Edo socio-cultural group, Esan Club 30, has said it will stand shoulder to shoulder with the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for the continuity of his sterling performance and consolidation of good governance in the state.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Engr. Francis Oriakhi and three officials on behalf of other members of the group, the Port-Harcourt-based group described Governor Obaseki as a man of scalable intellect and a man of class with a dignified personality, adding, “It would be distasteful or out of mischief for anyone not to notice and acknowledge the even-handedness of the governor as well as the equitable distribution of infrastructural amenities in the state.”

The group said it followed with sadness and great trepidation, the unfortunate, unnecessary, unsavory, avoidable but lingering spat between the sitting and duly elected governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki and a former governor and suspended National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole.

They said the scenario is uncalled for, detestable, potentially destabilizing, very offensive and definitely not representative of the values of Edo people and are incompatible with the foremost status of our dear state.

Esan Club 30 further praised Governor Obaseki development strides and inclusive politics, noting, “For Esan people, he has undoubtedly addressed and redressed the developmental anomalies and the non-representation in government suffered by our people during the Oshiomhole administration. The portent of the disqualification of a sitting and a performing governor by the NWC of the APC is the sizzling and inordinate desire of an emerging godfather who thinks that his word should be law. A society that elevates men above the law creates entropy in its polity.

“For Esan people, and looking at the bigger picture, the question that readily comes to mind would be: Is someone, somewhere trying to emasculate Edo Central Senatorial Zone from the governance tripod of our state? It is trite, as this juncture to emphasize that Obaseki is a brand who has by providence created a mass movement for the liberation of Edo people, for good governance, transparency, equity and for accountability.

The statement further read, “For emphasis, Obaseki is Edo-centric and Esan-loving. He has been adept at strategic governance by his deft moves. As a club, we cannot be accused of being partisan since both the governor and the National Chairman of the APC belong to the same political party.

“It is pertinent to state here that the leadership struggle in our dear state is a struggle between good and evil, between vile political predators and the hapless people, between conscienceless men and men of conscience and integrity, and above all, between a duly elected and a performing governor and a disruptive emergent godfather.”

OSHIOMOLE NEEDS TO LEARN FROM TINUBU AND APOLOGISE TO EDO PEOPLE FOR APPROBATING AND RE-PROBATING

By Faseesin Olasumbo Esq.
A Public Affairs Enthusiast

I sympathise with Oshiomole. This is obviously not a good time for a one time respected labour leader & comrade. Politics can really m ake & unmake as well as unmask the monster in man.

Oshiomole, please embrace peace. I love you! How could you jump everywhere, praising Obaseki and suddenly, you are becoming vengeful. We grew up believing vengeance is God.

Attempts to help yourself in fighting Obaseki, however rude & uncharitable he is, may enmeshed & deepen you in more crises. The painful thing about this,  is the crisis of confidence....

Adams, retrace & re align. This battle may wreck a non collateral damage. Perhaps you need to learn more from  Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu. He doesn't fight the manner you exhibited your skills.

Recall that Dino Melaye was not only rude to Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, He was brash-ly aggressive and wrong to have addressed Senator Oluremi Tinubu, with very unkind, undignified & impolite language to the extent that, Dino promised to impregnate another man's wife. "I will beat you, hit you & push you/fuck you...." ,he said.

That's how silly & petty  he ranted on the floor of the Red Chamber whereas he enjoyed parliamentary immunity to say & do anything without sanctions.

Similarly, the erstwhile President of Senate, Olubukola Saraki had a piece of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu's flesh sliced for meal. He got some pieces nto his vocal cavity while he held sway in @ 8th Assembly.

How did Tinubu treat all this, he rather allowed Saraki & Melaye enjoyed their independence in shenanigans, brigandage, & gangsterism while he operated the manual of political trajectory to oust and render both incompetent for any political relevance at the moment. Tinubu didn't open a contest with these political assailants, especially the opportunistic Dino Melaye.

Rather, he took them from root and uprooted every atom of recognizance, relevance & dignity they formerly enjoyed.

I'm yet to read Tinubu gloating since he achieved sterilizing these actors. Melaye has since become a solo musician, an orchestra with his fingers on keyboard or, his voices doing devotions & hyme. While Saraki is temporary off guard, unknown & unpopular, Dino can only make a dramatic turnaround in his new found artistical industry for entertainment. He may yet find fulfilment therein, who knows?

Against the background highlighted above, may I encourage you to look the direction of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu in the manner he fights and wins the battle. However, Tinubu had sometimes ago written and created public awareness that his political detractors & adversaries enjoy unlimited protection & unfettered access to demean & disrepute his person only to the extent that he acquiesce being a piece of trash wherein anyone could abuse, insult & pass unkind comments.

He would not take offence save for many overzealous supporters & impoverished followership who may otherwise act against his wishes but in defence.

Here, therefore, are things you could imbibe to keep your leadership impressive. Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu like any human being would fight where and when necessary but Tinubu has a way of fighting with unrivalled skills. He chooses his fight carefully, whom to fight, when and where to fight as well as who to fight in the circumstance. Tactically fighting and winning. He's not emotional or, intemperate. His response to stimuli & impulse may have passed the ordinary. He can be dispassionate in fighting battles, too.

He's a good leader to mentor Adams Oshiomole who must be humble to learn.

In conclusion, I hereby recommend the leader of APC, Senator Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as not only a qualified mentor but a leader for many willing mentee(s), including Adams Oshiomole who is unlikely getting the politics right as it were haven lost Bayelsa, Zamfara & others.
Like Balarebe Musa stated, Politics without bitterness may sometimes be the panacea and antidote.

Let Oshiomole pick new skills & re strategize. Perhaps the experience of Zamfara, Bayelza and other places the APC lost would never again suffice. He needs to unlearn & learn new devices to attain the status of remarkable leadership. He obviously needs to bridle his tongue. He must sincerely apologise to the good people of Edo State nay Nigeria for blowing hot & cold, approbating & re-probating, for double speak and obviously, for taking undue advantage.

The good people of Edo State cannot for any reason be taking for granted. By virtue of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic Of Nigerian (as amended), Sovereignty rest with the people and to that extent, the people determine whom they vest with that Sovereignty.

It is neither the place of a party chairman nor a non existent political formation that does the magic. It is the People as enunciated, expressed, entreched and validated by the Constitution.

They say, the hood does not make the monk. It's the people who must decide their own  leadership irrespective of the obvious indices & impossible circumstance. A leadership they can abide with going forward!

I congratulate the good people of Edo State for standing resolute against power blocks and purveyors of injustice. Gradually, I see liberation for the people wherein Godfatherism will no longer be a thing to showcase. While not conceding to Obaseki's obsession, I think the Chairman of the party ought to have been a mediator and not otherwise antagonistic for any reason that taints the expected neutrality of his status and vitiates the trust imposed on him.

It is a learning curve though. We look forward to internal reconciliatory moves In the days ahead. In politics, it is compromise. Take or leave it!

Family sends SOS to Edo Govt, Oba of Benin, IGP over Land Tussle

By Simeon Osajie

The family of Mr. Osasere Ekhator Ohonba of Ugbekun, Ihinmwinhin quarters, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, recently appealled to the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II and the Inspector General of Police to call one Mr. Odion Osayande Obasohan, Monday Osadolor and others to stay off their family's land.

Mr. Ekhator in a paper titled "A case of illegal constitution of the outlaw Community Development Association, falsification of land documents, forcible entry of land, wantons sales of Ekhator family land and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace against Mr. Odion Osayende Obasohan, Monday Osadolor, Benjamin Osaghae, Courage Obasohan, Lee Osazuwa, Johnbull Omoigui and others signed by Osamwonyi A. Ibude & Co. and made available to journalists during their protest to the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council by Ekhator himself and sympathizers.

Mr. Ekhator said he is the rightful owner of the landed property measuring 1,000 feet by 1,000 feet lying and situated at Otofure/Ekhator Community, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.

He said the said land is covered by a perimeter survey plan showing Ekhator family's land in the village and the Oba's approval.

Mr. Ekhator alleged that one Odion Osayende Obasohan and his cohorts constituted themselves as community development association and allocated the said land to themselves and other innocent buyers.

He however called on the Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II and the Inspector General of Police to call Mr. Odion Osayende Obasohan, Monday Osadolor, Benjamin Osaghae, Courage Obasohan, Lee Osazuwa, Johnbull Omoigui and others to order and stop encroaching on his father's land.

In his swift reaction, when contacted, Mr. Odion Osayende said the matter is already in court and that he has nothing to say on the matter at the moment.

Report Sensitive Issues - NAWOJ President Urges Female Journalists

The President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole, has urged all female journalists to boldly report sensitive issues such as rape.

Mrs. Omowole made the call during the opening ceremony of a three-day training on ‘’Gender Equity and Safety/Gender - Sensitive reporting for women Journalists at Edo State Council of the  Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Press centre, G.R.A, Benin City, Edo State.

The training is organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in collaboration with the Norwegian Union of Journalists, (Norsk Journalistiag).

According to Mrs. Omowole, female journalists should see to the end of sensitive report issues such as rape, ’’ as female Journalists, we have a duty to start and see to completion in the issue of rape’’.

She explained that “the purpose of the training is for us to be well equipped, it is not for you to be trained and go to sleep’’.

The National President urged all female journalists to be serious with the training so that after the training, they can pass the knowledge they have gathered to their colleagues.

She urged all female journalists to be factual in their reporting so that they can become award-winning journalists across the globe, ‘’ it is not all about you as a person to speak. It is the news you report that speaks for you. Sometimes we see most of our colleagues in, UN, BBC, VOA, it is because of the type of reports that they push out’’.

The National President also promised to train journalists throughout her tenure and also build a secretariat for training NAWOJ, ‘’ the only thing I promised after training is to set up a secretariat. Whether I am there or not, at the time they will finish building the Institute of Journalism, NAWOJ will have tools for training. I want journalists to be trained and retrained’’.

She insisted that men should be part of the training, the reason is that ‘’someone said that there is an increase in rape. For me, it is not the increase but it is the awareness that makes people come out to report. Before we use to hide it under the table’’.

‘’We also need to consciously tell people that the fact that a lady wants to visit you, it doesn’t mean she came to visit you for sex. Sometimes in our traditions, we don’t know the difference. We need to write about these things that constitute rape,’’ she added.

Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole stated that there is always certificates given to every female journalist at the end of the training, ‘’we give certificates so that you keep remembering that you took part in the training and not just for fun’’.

In the same vein, Edo State Chairperson of NWAOJ, Mrs. Adesuwa Ehimuan, said that there is an increase in rape cases across the globe ‘’violence against journalists is a worrying global trend. Both male and female media professionals, bloggers, and other media players are increasing, targeted for their reporting. Yet women face increased risk due to their specific vulnerabilities entailed by gender. They are subject to the same attack, acts, of intimidation, harassment, threats, and surveillance’’.

Mrs Adesuwa Ehimuan, Chairperson of Edo State chapter of NAWOJ urged all stakeholders, policymakers, media, to evaluate how threats against women journalists based on gender can be addressed at multiple levels within work to promote the safety of journalists.

She added that ‘’ human rights violations experienced by women journalists must be addressed, in the broader context and structure of discrimination against women. This requires substantive shifts in deeply entrenched social and cultural norms, by strengthening the safety mechanism and challenging the patriarchal structure which hinders women journalists ability to report freely and advance in their profession, the role of women will be strengthened in all societies and bring a full spectrum of coverage, skill, and perspective go the media in Nigeria and the world at large’’.

Mrs. Ehimuan, stated that the safety and security of Journalists are essential in society,‘’ This training is apt because safety and security are vital for every journalist’s work particularly because of the various beat they cover. Women journalists deserve to have equity regardless of gender in the profession because every journalist contribute to issues of development across the world’’

According to Mrs. Rafat Salami, an Assistant Director in Voice of Nigeria, ‘’what we are trying to do, is to increase the awareness among journalists on how they can do their jobs and do it safely as COVID-19 is ravaging the world, journalists are also at risk. Our jobs bring lots of risks and COVID-19 makes it double because there are precautions we just have to take’’.

’We have been doing this project since 2007 and what we have to continue to do, is to teach more journalists on how to do their jobs more safely, also for them to understand current trends,’’ she added.

‘’The project is across Africa and it is not just Edo State. We have gone round 14 states in Nigeria already,’’ Mrs. Salami stated.

Mrs. Salami said that lots of research have been made to show that female journalists are faced with sexual harassment in the course of carrying out their duties, ‘’research shows that female journalists are faced sexual harassment in their workplace than outside their work; the bulk of sexual harassment from female journalists are faced within the newsrooms’’.

She advised journalists both male and female not to attend events alone because of risk factors, ‘’ as a journalist, don’t go for an event alone, do not travel alone, be safety conscious if you see unusual movement, know that it is time to exit that place. Before you go for an event, you must do research on the area that is the peculiar nature of that place’’.

She also advised all organisations, to set up sexual harassment desk, where journalists will be free to report sexual harassment, ‘’The greatest problem is, we don’t talk about it and we need journalists to be free to talk about it’’.

The General Manager of Radio Nigeria in Edo State, (Bronze F.M.), Mrs. Bimbo Yetunde, also urged all female journalists to know how to handle gender issues and also impart the knowledge to young female journalists who have not been trained in the job to be well informed when they are reporting.

‘’Rape cases are increasing day by day, between January to May this year, it has gone over 700 cases. We need to raise our voices and say no to rape. We also need to learn to report as professionals, let us know that we are not the weaker vessel’’. She added.

The Edo State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist, (NUJ), Mr. Roland Osakue, promised to do his best for Edo State NAWOJ and advised journalists to follow the ethics of journalism, ‘’Journalism is our core profession, and we must stand by anywhere to maintain it. We must display the ethics of this profession wherever we going, particularly now that governorship election is coming up in this state’’.

‘’Don’t allow yourselves to be used by any politician. Distinguish yourselves from politics, and do your work as a core profession in journalism. If we can be able to exercise that judiciously, you will see that you will not enter the pitfall of politicians,” he added.

There were also interactive sessions, where participants were divided into three groups to identify sexual harassment in their various organisations and the way forward.

Dramas on sexual harassment were presented by female journalists.

Engr. Gideon Ikhine Denies Stepping Down for Obaseki

By Simeon Osajie

A leading Gubernatorial aspirant in the Edo 2020 election,  Engr. Gideon Ikhine has debunked the going round social media that he had stepped down for Godwin Obaseki who he claimed is not yet a member of the PDP family.

In a telephone interview, Engr. Ikhine said that, "Governor Godwin is my very good friend and if at all he is nursing the ambition to join the PDP family, l should be the first he will approached."

Ikhine who who also took to his twitter page to personally disclaim the rumour asked delegates who will be voting in the primaries coming up on Saturday at Ogbe stadium  not be discouraged or distracted by such speculations.

“I am still in the race, I have not stepped down for anybody neither has the discussion come up. I will like to let the leaders and delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party, my supporters and friends know that I am going all the way. This is not negotiable.”

It was gathered that many members of the restoration have totally rejected the idea of asking the aspirant to step down.

A statement by the organisation’s Media Officer, Tony Okonegene, said: “ For the avoidance of doubt, Engr. Gideon Ikhine is very much in the race and set to win the primary. Please disregard any such lies which we expect to heighten as we move closer to the finishing line."

It will be revealed that an article published today by Opera News, Wednesday, June 17, 2020 with the title: Edo 2020: Two PDP Aspirants step down for Obaseki

The Edo State Chapter of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday condemned what it described as   "an unprecedented increase in Sexual and Gender Based Violence  in Nigeria especially  rape".

Sani Momodu, Coordinator of the Edo State Chapter of the NHRC made the condemnation during a peaceful match through some major roads and streets of Benin City, State to protest against sexual and gender based violence ravaging the country recently.

Rape and other sexual and gender based violence, he said, are crimes that must not be condoned and perpetrators must not be shielded  and this why the NHRC is embanking on a week long national campaign and peaceful protest against Sexual and gender based violence.

"There must be no settlement behind the scene. Perpetrators must be brought to book" he said.

"The Police must also quickly investigate all reported cases of rape and charge suspects to  court  quickly and must not be involved in settling such cases out of court.

"The police, irrespective of the circumstances, must  take a rape victim to the hospital for medical examination in order to obtain vital evidence relevant to securing conviction.

"We are also using this medium to appeal to the chief Judges of the respective states to establish Fast Track Courts for the purpse of quick dispensation of rape and other sexual and gender based violence cases.

"We appeal to the various ministries of justice and well-meaning individuals in the society to help in providing support and shelter for victims of sexual based violence especially rape. The Edo Coordinator of NHRC also spoke on Domestic Violence, saying "this must be treated strictly as a criminal offence  and not a family matter . Victims must learn to speak out instead of dying in silence
