By Simeon Osajie

For sixteen years I have being in the struggle, I was beaten my rain, I was beaten by sun, I had challenges, I encountered armed robbers on my way during campaign, I had accident that almost took my life, my vehicle summersaulted, I lost my armored car, all in the struggle of try democracy in Edo State, all the struggle to make sure Edo smile when I become governor of the state and with God on my side, I am still alive. I have being sharing rice to every home, every family across Edo State in the past sixteen years.” “I gave I-pads to Edo students in this past sixteen years in company of my wife and Edo people. I paid medical bills for those that could not pay their bills in the hospitals like UBTH and other hospitals. To God’s glory, I was able to show love to my neighourbour. Now we are set for victory, someone who joined the party less than 72 hours will come to take the ticket of the party. It is not acceptable. I now ask, where our conscience is. You want me to submit my labour for sixteen in vain. Never. That will not happen in this state. For sixteen years, I received shame and received disappointment. God bless my wife, Kate Imansuangbon for standing by me, God bless her tremendously. I remember visiting the late Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Oba Erediuwa with my kids when they were small, that is over sixteen years now and you mean those sixteen years don’t count. That’s not going to happen. It is unacceptable.” “My pain is for the country. This is not about me anymore; it’s about democracy in this country. This cannot happen during the military era. You jump from APC under 72 hours and you want to get automatic ticket from the party (PDP) I labored for. Never will allow this to happen, it will be over my dead body, it will not happen. Enough is enough. I am ready to die for this course. We must stop this political hooliganism that people will come to chase you out. The party leaders are prevailing on me to step down for Obaseki who joined the party less than 72 hours. This will not happen. I think government should create and target programs inclined towards the curbing or elimination of sexual crimes in our society," she appealed.

HOW GOV. GODWIN OBASEKI AND HIS DEPUTY, PHILLIP SHAIBU RECEIVES PDP MEMBERSHIP CARD
By Simeon Osajie
It was a hip of activities at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Edo State Secretariat along 1st East Circular Road, Benin City when the government of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu finally joined the party. The PDP faithfuls alongside supporters of Governor Godwin Obaseki were chanting solidarity songs waiting for the arrival of the his excellency thereby differed the social distancing in view of the covid 19 pandemic ravaging the country that allowed 20 persons to assemble in any gathering. When Godwin Obaseki finally landed 2.15pm, the crowd was overwhelming thereby forcing personal aides of the governor to delay their principal disengaging from the official vehicle. The official defection of Obaseki to the PDP and the formal receipt of the leadership of the party in the state led by Dr. Tony Aiziegbemi in the party secretariat have put to rest the widespread speculation of the governor defection. The Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aiziegbemi welcomed governor Obaseki to the party and assured him that, “going by the party constitution, PDP governor in any state of the federation is regarded as the Leader of the Party and will henceforth be treated as such. The governor was thereafter given the party register to append his name and signature. The Oredo Ward 3 Chairman was then called upon to hand over the PDP membership card to Governor Obaseki. Responding after receiving his PDP membership card, Governor Obaseki emphasized that “I have officially joined the party to advance my ambition to seek re-election as governor of Edo State. I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state. With the energy I witnessed in the party secretariat on my arrival, what Edo people has witnessed in terms of human and capital development in the past four years will be a child’s play compared to what is to come. The bore in development and democratic practice both in party and governance in Edo State in particular and Nigeria in general would be as never been witnessed.” On the governor entourage were serving commissioners, APC chieftains loyal to the governor, Kabiru Adjoto, immediate past speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, among others. In another development, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu was also at the PDP Secretariat to formally decamp to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Receiving the deputy governor to the PDP Secretariat was the Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aiziegbemin and his executive members. Dr. Aiziegbemin introduced the deputy governor to the executive members of the State PDP and thereafter invited the deputy governor to explain the reason behind his visit to the state headquarters of the party. In his response, the deputy governor was emphatic that “since the governor had joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and we his followers have decided that wherever he goes we will go. For me, it is only customary to come and formalize into PDP. I am here to officially put my signature of my membership to the PDP. I want to thanks all of you and the Edo people and by the grace of God, we can assure them that those good things that we have stated; that this PDP vehicle we are intending to use we will also use it to continue those projects Mr. Governor has started,” the deputy governor concluded. The deputy governor’s ward chairman from his local government area was thereafter called upon to hand over the PDP membership card to Comrade Phillip Shaibu that witnessed thunderous crowd response. Responding to question from journalists, deputy said that “actually, it is means feeling that I am joining PDP. First you struggle to form a party and after forming the party, those that benefitting from the party that you formed took over the party and become tyrant. It is not very easy to abandon that vehicle that you helped to formed and nurtured because one individual became the king in the system and become undemocratic.” “And for some of us, we believe in the people and we cannot abandon the state for people like that, and that is while we decided to join the Democratic Party, which is PDP for the purpose to continuing the developmental strides of Governor Godwin Obaseki. We decided that were governors goes, that is where we are going. I am excited that the Governor said we have to try the People’s Democratic Party to actually the vision of Edo people.” ”Some of the faces I am seeing today were those faces that were hard to crack. Coming together with these faces and work in one accord, I think the sky will not just be our limit but will be our starting point.” I am happy to associate myself with the PDP family,” Comrade shaibu concluded.

Report Sensitive Issues - NAWOJ President Urges Female Journalists
The President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole, has urged all female journalists to boldly report sensitive issues such as rape.
Mrs. Omowole made the call during the opening ceremony of a three-day training on ‘’Gender Equity and Safety/Gender - Sensitive reporting for women Journalists at Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Press centre, G.R.A, Benin City, Edo State.
The training is organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in collaboration with the Norwegian Union of Journalists, (Norsk Journalistiag).
According to Mrs. Omowole, female journalists should see to the end of sensitive report issues such as rape, ’’ as female Journalists, we have a duty to start and see to completion in the issue of rape’’.
She explained that “the purpose of the training is for us to be well equipped, it is not for you to be trained and go to sleep’’.
The National President urged all female journalists to be serious with the training so that after the training, they can pass the knowledge they have gathered to their colleagues.
She urged all female journalists to be factual in their reporting so that they can become award-winning journalists across the globe, ‘’ it is not all about you as a person to speak. It is the news you report that speaks for you. Sometimes we see most of our colleagues in, UN, BBC, VOA, it is because of the type of reports that they push out’’.
The National President also promised to train journalists throughout her tenure and also build a secretariat for training NAWOJ, ‘’ the only thing I promised after training is to set up a secretariat. Whether I am there or not, at the time they will finish building the Institute of Journalism, NAWOJ will have tools for training. I want journalists to be trained and retrained’’.
She insisted that men should be part of the training, the reason is that ‘’someone said that there is an increase in rape. For me, it is not the increase but it is the awareness that makes people come out to report. Before we use to hide it under the table’’.
‘’We also need to consciously tell people that the fact that a lady wants to visit you, it doesn’t mean she came to visit you for sex. Sometimes in our traditions, we don’t know the difference. We need to write about these things that constitute rape,’’ she added.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole stated that there is always certificates given to every female journalist at the end of the training, ‘’we give certificates so that you keep remembering that you took part in the training and not just for fun’’.
In the same vein, Edo State Chairperson of NWAOJ, Mrs. Adesuwa Ehimuan, said that there is an increase in rape cases across the globe ‘’violence against journalists is a worrying global trend. Both male and female media professionals, bloggers, and other media players are increasing, targeted for their reporting. Yet women face increased risk due to their specific vulnerabilities entailed by gender. They are subject to the same attack, acts, of intimidation, harassment, threats, and surveillance’’.
Mrs Adesuwa Ehimuan, Chairperson of Edo State chapter of NAWOJ urged all stakeholders, policymakers, media, to evaluate how threats against women journalists based on gender can be addressed at multiple levels within work to promote the safety of journalists.
She added that ‘’ human rights violations experienced by women journalists must be addressed, in the broader context and structure of discrimination against women. This requires substantive shifts in deeply entrenched social and cultural norms, by strengthening the safety mechanism and challenging the patriarchal structure which hinders women journalists ability to report freely and advance in their profession, the role of women will be strengthened in all societies and bring a full spectrum of coverage, skill, and perspective go the media in Nigeria and the world at large’’.
Mrs. Ehimuan, stated that the safety and security of Journalists are essential in society,‘’ This training is apt because safety and security are vital for every journalist’s work particularly because of the various beat they cover. Women journalists deserve to have equity regardless of gender in the profession because every journalist contribute to issues of development across the world’’
According to Mrs. Rafat Salami, an Assistant Director in Voice of Nigeria, ‘’what we are trying to do, is to increase the awareness among journalists on how they can do their jobs and do it safely as COVID-19 is ravaging the world, journalists are also at risk. Our jobs bring lots of risks and COVID-19 makes it double because there are precautions we just have to take’’.
‘’We have been doing this project since 2007 and what we have to continue to do, is to teach more journalists on how to do their jobs more safely, also for them to understand current trends,’’ she added.
‘’The project is across Africa and it is not just Edo State. We have gone round 14 states in Nigeria already,’’ Mrs. Salami stated.
Mrs. Salami said that lots of research have been made to show that female journalists are faced with sexual harassment in the course of carrying out their duties, ‘’research shows that female journalists are faced sexual harassment in their workplace than outside their work; the bulk of sexual harassment from female journalists are faced within the newsrooms’’.
She advised journalists both male and female not to attend events alone because of risk factors, ‘’ as a journalist, don’t go for an event alone, do not travel alone, be safety conscious if you see unusual movement, know that it is time to exit that place. Before you go for an event, you must do research on the area that is the peculiar nature of that place’’.
She also advised all organisations, to set up sexual harassment desk, where journalists will be free to report sexual harassment, ‘’The greatest problem is, we don’t talk about it and we need journalists to be free to talk about it’’.
The General Manager of Radio Nigeria in Edo State, (Bronze F.M.), Mrs. Bimbo Yetunde, also urged all female journalists to know how to handle gender issues and also impart the knowledge to young female journalists who have not been trained in the job to be well informed when they are reporting.
‘’Rape cases are increasing day by day, between January to May this year, it has gone over 700 cases. We need to raise our voices and say no to rape. We also need to learn to report as professionals, let us know that we are not the weaker vessel’’. She added.
The Edo State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist, (NUJ), Mr. Roland Osakue, promised to do his best for Edo State NAWOJ and advised journalists to follow the ethics of journalism, ‘’Journalism is our core profession, and we must stand by anywhere to maintain it. We must display the ethics of this profession wherever we going, particularly now that governorship election is coming up in this state’’.
‘’Don’t allow yourselves to be used by any politician. Distinguish yourselves from politics, and do your work as a core profession in journalism. If we can be able to exercise that judiciously, you will see that you will not enter the pitfall of politicians,” he added.
There were also interactive sessions, where participants were divided into three groups to identify sexual harassment in their various organisations and the way forward.
Dramas on sexual harassment were presented by female journalists.
