BSM Threatens Obaseki With Court Action Over Compulsory Vaccination

By The9JaTREND

Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) Worldwide, a non governmental organization, a non profit making group, has reacted to threat by Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Edo State Governor of making vaccination compulsory for all resident in State.

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by the President of the Group, Ambassador Curtis Eghosa Ugbo made available to newsmen.

According to Amb. Ugbo, "The Edo State Government led by Mr. Godwin Obaseki, do not have the right to pressure Edo State people who are passing through economic hardship and insecurity in the State to be vaccinated.

"One would have expected that Governor Godwin Obaseki will find solution to the insecurity in the state.

"A lot of recommendations were made on how to cum the insecurity in the state but Governor Obaseki never make any arrangement on how to clear both side of Benin-Auchi Road, where kidnapping is going on everyday, instead, he want to compel every resident in the State to take part in the current vaccination which we are not even sure is healthy for consumption."

Going further, Amb. Ugbo added, "Where was Governor Obaseki when citizens of Edo state were passing through hard time during the compulsory seat at home Covid-19 pandemic, Edo state government deprived us from palliatives until some youths forcefully broke into different warehouses across the state. That tells us that Edo state government do not mean well for the good people of the state.

"This new development of Governor Obaseki will be resisted; he can not infringe on the fundamental human rights of the good people of Edo State.

"BSM presumed that this latest action of Mr. Godwin Obaseki should be regarded as a 'joke' of the century. But if he refuse to re-address the issue, BSM will have no option than to take legal action against him and his government of Edo State," the statement opined.

Case Against Smart Agbonlaho, Osagie Uwangue For Alleged Forgery Adjourns 13, 14 Sept., 2021

By The9JaTREND

The suit between Edo State Commissioner of Police Versus Messers Smart Agbonlaho and Osaigie Uwangue was adjourned at resumed hearing following the inability of the prosecutor to provide some documents.

At the resumed sitting at Ogbeson Magistrate Court 2, Agbor Park, Benin City when the trial magistrate called for the day’s proceedings, the Police Prosecutor Inspector, Charity Asemota, pleaded with the court for an adjournment as only the proof of evidence was ready and had been served, though not filed.

Inspector Asemota told the court that she had served the defendants proof of evident apart from the statement on oath of her witnesses in proof of the alleged of forgery

She therefore pleaded for a time  to regularize her papers and serve the statement on oath.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Mutairu Oare adjourned the matter at the instance of the prosecution to the 13th and 14th of September, 2021 for continuation of prosecution’s case.

Mr. Agbonlahor is alleged to have forged a landed document bearing the oba of Benin's approval belonging to a Europe based Nigerian as well as power of Attorney.

The said Oba's approval was the document attached to a matter filed by Mr. Smart Agbonlahor for his client who had given him the power of attorney to do so on his behalf at the High Court.

However, the complainant at the lower court moved the police to arrest and arraign the legal practitioner on allegation that the document was forged.

Also arraigned alongside Mr. Agbonlahor was Mr. Osagie Uwangue who had offered to give evidence in the High Court  that the owner of the land for which Mr. Agbonlahor was exercising the Power of Attorney actually owned the land.

The civil action at the High Court has been on since 2017 and was being heard by the late Justice Morrison Ighodalo until his demise.

For the 2nd Defendant, his counsel, Mr. I. Eguwkun said his client was joined and charged to court because he vouched that the owner of the property was known to him for over thirty years as a neighbour.

Hearing on the matter resumes on the 13th of September, 2021 for continuation of the prosecution’s case.

Journalists Seeks Support For Esan Land Vigilante, Atanakpa

...Challenges Other Edo Districts On feasible Actions

By The9JaTREND

An indigene of Esan Land, Mr Usifo Sebastine Ebhuomhan, has thrown his media weight behind the newly formed vigilante group of Edo Central Security Network.

According to the Abuja-based multiple award-winning journalist, Atanakpa, as the security group is code-named, is an idea which time has come.

Following the launching of the vigilante group that was formed to defend and secure the people of Esan Land, whose families, wives, children, homes, offices, farmlands, markets, schools and roads have increasingly been attacked with violent, bloody, destructive and deadly precision by bandits, kidnappers, headsmen, assassins and other unidentified criminals, Ebhuomhan says Atanakpa would stem the worrying tide of helpless but preventable violent attacks and restore the confidence of the people to go about normal and legal businesses again.

He particularly thanked all those that brought the idea, planned it, made contributions and implemented the formation of the vigilante with tools to secure all the five local government areas of Edo Central District.

"As a proud son of Esan Land, I personally and wholeheartedly support this epic and historic effort to complement government at all levels in the security of Esan Land for human, properties and businesses to thrive and raise existential standards of all.

I give kudos to all those that planned, contributed to and implemented the idea. May God continue to bless them as we, their sons and daughters in other lands, continue to give our physical, moral, psychological and material supports in one way or another to the good and worthy cause.

I urge all sons and daughters of Esan Land at home and in the Diaspora in particular and Edo State in general to key in, chip in and support this visionary network and its entire people under the leadership of a progressive, noiseless and accountable man, Mr Joel Aidamebor."

While canvassing support for Atanakpa, Ebhuomhan reminded the vigilante members to always be guided by conscience, law and responsibility in their historic duty to the development of Esan Land.

He further appealed to leaders of the two other districts of Edo State to come up with similar ideas and actions to secure human lives and properties against threats in the districts so as to fast track development of Edo State.

Mr. Ebhuomhan is a winner of the prestigious Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA); JAAIDS Red Ribbon Award; Wole Soyinka Investigative Category Award; ENHANSE/Internews Journalism Development Program Award; Edo Civil Society Organisations Award etc.

BSM Expresses Disappointment On Edo Police Force Over Vigilante/Police Viral Video

...Charges Gov. Obaseki, Edo CP, DSS For Thorough Investigation And Bring Culprits To Justice

By The9JaTREND

The Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) Worldwide has expressed disappointment with the conduct of some officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State command in an attempt to effect the release of a suspected notorious kidnapper and a drug dealer that was arrested by some members of the Edo State Vigilante Network team.

According to the President of the Movement, Ambassador Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, who told newsmen that
"Why should two policemen go to effect the release of a suspected kidnapper caught by the Vigilante if there is no fowl play and what is their relationship with a supposed notorious kidnapping gang?

"It beat our imagination that some policemen under the leadership of the Edo State Commissioner of Police, who supposedly are to protect lives and properties of citizens in the state went as going to destroy the properties at the office of the Vigilantes group? This is against the ethics and duties of the Nigeria Police Force professionally.

Ambassador Curtis Eghosa Ugbo accused some of the Police officers of trying to cover up for one of them who is alleged to be involved in illicit drugs dealing business in the state..

"We in the BSM Worldwide Organization say no to the injustice that is going on in the State by some unscrupulous officers of the Nigeria Police Force. How can a police man found to be involved in an illicit drugs dealing business and also make attempt to release a suspected notorious Kidnapper? Are they telling us not to rely on the Police Authority in the State?

"Anyways, we are happy that the DSS was later invited by the Vigilante group and are presently on top of the investigation. I hope they will prove me wrong to doing their thorough investigation to ascertain who is trying to cover up," Ambassador Ugbo opined.

It would be recalled that recently two police men were apprehended by members of Vigilantes group in Benin city for alleged possession of illicit drugs.

According to the Commander of Vigilante group, Mr. Osasere Ekhator aka Awilo, "When the Department of the State Security Services, who were on patrol were alerted about the suspects; said they accosted the policemen and discovered they were in possession of hard drugs.

"When we arrested the kidnapper, our intention was to hand him over to the Nigeria Police, State Command as usual but we discovered that whenever we do so, the Police always take the glory and also release the criminals without charging them to Court for prosecution while we are the ones who takes the risk of going into forestry to arrest the criminal kidnappers.

"I have a lot of videos in my possession that shows our handing over of kidnappers to the Anti-Cultism and Anti-kidnapping sections at the State Command including some weapons we recover from the kidnappers.

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO)  Edo State Command, SP Kontongs Bello expressed concern over the action of the Vigilantes. He said the  police men were invited  to help secure the release of a civilian friend  arrested by the Vigilantes unknown to the policemen that the man conveying them had illicit drugs in his car.

He said the police men were innocent of the crime as the State Police Command has commenced investigation into the viral video.

Following the arrest of the police personnel, some vigilantes who spoke to The9JaTREND and don't want their names mentioned said properties in their office was allegedly destroyed by the Police officers that came and that some of their members arrested by same policemen.

Reacting to the alleged destruction of property in Vigilante office, the police image maker said the police never attacked them but two members of the vigilance group were apprehended so as to help with investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Benin Solidarity Movement BSM Worldwide members have called on the Edo State Government led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS in the State to properly investigate this matter and bring culprits to justice.

PRP Will Defeats APC, PDP Come 2024 Governorship Election In Edo

...Calls On Gov. Obaseki To Wake Up to His Responsibility

By The9JaTREND

The leadership of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Edo State has boasted that the party will take over Edo government at Osadebey Avenue. GRA., Benin City come 2024 governorship election in the state and urged Mr. Godwin Obaseki to wake up to his responsibilities by providing the dividends of democracy he promised the people of Edo State during his campaign period that earned him victory in the governorship election in the state.

According to a 10-point communique issued and signed by PRP Chairman in Edo State, Mr. Greg Igbinomwanhia and Jeffrey Imonmion, Secretary made available to newsmen stated, "Edo state people should do away with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because they have failed in all ramifications for their inabilityies to bring dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of its citizenry in the state.

"PRP has come to stay in Edo State and we will offer better alternative leadership regarding good governance to the good people of Edo State, we are sincerely committed to improving the lives of the people if given the opportunity.”

"We however advise him not to allow the influence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) politicians around him to overwhelm him but be determined to deliver the actual gains of democracy to the people.

"We are aware that the lure of office and the attraction of partisan interest may sway the governor to be tempted to act like a typical Nigeria politician, we urge him to resist this and be focused so that the ‘talakawas’ will not continue to suffer at the end".

Mr. Igbinomwanhia, while speaking on the state of the health sector, said the governor should declare a state of emergency in it and that it is not enough to erect a high standard modern hospital where only the rich can afford but should also consider the poor masses and   make healthcare services accessible to them.

"We can recall that when the governor came on board he promised to use all primary health centers as pilot program and that the governor should not forget this especially as we have not seen much progress in this direction.

"The governor should make sure that every citizen in Edo state has access to quality and affordable health care in the state which for now seems to be scarce.

"We want to particularly draw the governor’s attention to the pathetic condition at the specialist hospital in Benin.

"The specialist hospital has one stretcher, the roof is leaking, no mattress, there is poor sanitation around the environment, there is high cost of drugs, there is poor attitude to work by of nurses and doctors, in fact the situation is quite terrible.

"People who go there mildly ill leave there seriously sick", he alleged.

He urged members of the state exco of the party to engage on aggressive membership drive across the 18 local government areas of the state just as he encouraged all Edo people to embrace the party and do away with APC and PDP, saying that they have caused untold hardship in the lives of Nigerians.

The people of Kalaba led by their Paramount Ruler, Chief Kolibo Francis, expressed gratitude and happiness over the provision of the solar power by the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria.

They commended the Netherlands Embassy and ERA/FoEN for the good development gesture, noting that the power project has shone the light on their community and its environs to improve their living conditions.

The Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria accompanied by the second secretary had earlier paid a courtesy visit to ERA/FoEN office in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State in 2018 as part of their tour of the Niger Delta region to see firsthand the despoliation of the environment by the multinational oil companies operating in the region and their impacts on the rural dwellers in the area.

Act Fast Over Plans Coronation Of Shuwa Arab In Edo - BSM Urges Gov. Obaseki, Oba Ewuare II

...Calls On Security Agencies To Go After Iduriase, His Cotravers

By The9JaTREND

The Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) worldwide has called on Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and His Royal Majesty, Omo .N' Oba N' Edo, Uku Akpolokpolor, Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin Kingdom to swing into action and arrest Iduriase and his cotravers who are behind the alleged plans  to installed Sultan Idriss Adanno as the Sultan of Shuwa Arab in Edo State

According to a press statement issued and signed by Ambassador Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, President, Benin Solidarity Movement BSM Worldwide, stated, "We will want the Security Agencies to go on the trail of Iduriase and his cotravers to confirm his link with the terrorists and kidnappers operating with impunity in that axis of Edo State where he is a Duke."

Ambassador Igbo statement opined, "We are expressing our distate for the planned coronation being that in Benin Kingdom we only recognise our father, His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, N'Ogidigan, as our Supreme Monarch; Any other claimant to royalty in the kingdom is inviting trouble.

"BSM is quite aware that these new intruders into Benin Kingdom are the kingpins of kidnapping in that axis of Edo State (Uhunmwonde Local Government Area) and they are very well funded by international terrorist groups.

"If they have been having a smooth ride in other parts of the country they have met a brick wall in Benin Kingdom where their plans to have a foothold will never see the light of day.

"We are also using this opportunity to warn the Enogie of the area where the coronation is slated to hold (Eyaen) who is also the owner of the hotel (Rialto), Prince Osazuwa Aiwerioghene Iduriase to thread softly. In the recent past his controversial acts has been a source of concern.

"He has been instrumental to making the management of the Coca Cola Bottling Company feel miserable with his attack on them which if he succeeds will mean that the company's workers, a large chunk of who are Edolites, will become unemployed.

"In this his latest move it will not be a strange story to hear that Iduriase has been bought over with a large amount of dollars by the self acclaimed Sultan Idriss Adanno and his cohorts.

"Furthermore, we ones again call on the Oba of Benin KINGDOM and the Edo State Government, to swiftly act on our observations and complaints, "for a stitch in time saves nine".

By The9JaTREND

In the petition presented to the security agencies, Orukpe said, “I was fully aware of the grant for Edo market women. EDO NORTH SENATE 2023: Owans Will Produce A Consensus Candidate, Says Yisa Beaimoh

By The9aTREND

As the quest to who represents Edo North Senatorial District of Edo State in the forthcoming 2023 senatorial election gather momentum, a former senator in the Nigeria 8th Assembly, Senator Yisa Braimoh, has emphasised the need to allow the Owans produce a consensus candidate for the slot.

He dropped the hints during an interaction with The9JaTREND in Owan, Edo State.

The senatorial seat for the district is expected to become vacant in 2023.

According to Senator Braimoh, the incumbent Senator,  Francis Alimikhena, who is from Etsako axis  eight years of two tenure will terminate by 2023 thereafter  power should  shift to another axis in the zone, in the spirit of the fairness and inclusiveness among the three clans that makes up the Senatorial District.

Senator Braimoh, however, revealed that they intend to do so under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), submitting that it is a sign of their implicit confidence in the ability of the party to create a level playing field for all interested aspirants.

Senator Braimoh, a prominent Edo North citizen and staunch PDP leader, is  the first and the only Owan indigene to represent the district in the Senate between 2007 and 2011.

According to the former senator, “Owan will vie for the Senatorial ticket in 2023 under the PDP platform. The reason is basically to right the wrong of past marginalization visited on our people.”

The acclaimed immensely popular grassrootsmobilizer further disclosed that this time around the Owans will mobilize every available resources at their disposal in support of power shift and equity.

OGONI CLEANUP FAILURE: Who Is Afraid of National Assembly Oversight Visits To Ogoni Land? Says ERA

By The9JaTREND

Nigeria’s foremost environmental advocacy group, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), has condemned the response by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to its recent report; No Clean Up, No Justice: a decade of failures? as spurious and diversionary, even as it challenged the agency to focus more on delivery of a proper clean up that benefits the people and restoration of the polluted environment in Ogoniland.

According to ERA/FoEN, "the organization remains resolute to champion a proper cleanup as an environmental advocacy group and continues to speak verifiable truth to power, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with the indefatigable and resolute people of Ogoni in their implacable opposition to the genocidal activities of Shell on their lands, rivers, and lives."

ERA/FoEN was birthed in 1993 from the crucible of the Ogoni struggle. The organization drew inspiration from the Ogoni Bill of Rights and the mobilizations of the Ogoni people. Dr Godwin Uyi Ojo and others in the ERA/FoEN family visited Ogoni at that time to conduct action research on the Ogoni mobilizations in the early 1990s to support the struggle for environmental justice. ERA/FoEN, cannot at this pivotal moment in history shirk its obligations to the people of Ogoni alone and responsibility of care for the environment.

ERA/FoEN condemns the bland advertorial response by HYPREP and states that HYPREP response was a cover up and a cheap diversionary tactics to deflect from the reality on ground and an outright falsehood and the confirmation that Shell and HYPREP continue to work with some discredited former members who were removed by the general assembly for foisting division and conflict of interest.

It says that HYPREP advertorial response was an audacious and vexatious judicial overreach on a matter that is sub judice, over which a competent court has granted far reaching orders restraining the former chair of ERA/FoEN board of trustees from parading himself as such and further restrained the former chair and his hirelings from participating in the management of ERA/FoEN as well as maintaining that Godwin Uyi Ojo remains the valid Executive Director of ERA/FoEN. The release adds that the valid subsisting order of court should be respected and focus on issues raised in the report for improvement.

ERA/FoEN believes that the Ogoni people stand on the part of justice when they declared Shell persona non grata in Ogoni until the company has publicly apologized for the genocide it perpetrated in Ogonland, cleanup, remediation and restoration of the ecosystem and pay appropriate compensation to Ogoni people for the death and destruction the company brought to the impacted communities.

ERA/FoEN, therefore reiterates its call for the immediate sack of Prof. Phillip Shekwolo because he was an integral part of creating the unmitigated disaster that is the Ogoni environment by its abysmal failure to conduct cleanup operations even up to the very low standards set by Shell itself according to UNEP report released in 2011. How can those who presided over the failed clean up by Shell also be supervising the same polluted sites under HYPREP years later? This is a huge joke on Nigeria taken too far. The Ogoni cleanup process is not and cannot be a platform to reinforce failure.

HYPREP’s advertorial condemning the call for national assembly oversight function shows that the agency is scared stiff and do not want a repeat of the scrutiny by the NASS officials in October 2020 that led to some level of restructuring in the agency. ERA/FoEN calls on the people’s representatives in the National Assembly to immediately increase its oversight of the cleanup process before the project collapses from this present cauldron of ineptitude, high wire politicking and corruption.

The fate of the Ogoni people and the over 31 million people that call the Niger Delta home hangs in the balance in this decade of ecosystem restoration as declared by the United Nations.  The federal government environmental legacy project which is the clean up of Ogoni land with commitments of millions of dollars must not be allowed to fail.

ERA/FoEN states that in consonance with global standard of “polluter pays principle” Shell and the other multinational companies should pay to enable independent and competent experts undertake this multidisciplinary scientific and community building exercise. Shell should neither be on the governing council nor on the board of trustees or occupying the project coordination office superintending a process they failed at when they had the opportunity.

ERA/FoEN, had expressed grave concern in our 2020 report No Cleanup, No justice that HYPREP coordination office lacks basic expertise in all areas that was similar to the 2021 report.  ERA/FoEN, calls on HYPREP and the public to study the evidenced based reports that the organization has produced over the last eight years.

HYPREP tried unsuccessfully to deflect attention from the grave concerns that were raised in our 2020 and 2021 reports about the atrocious failure of the scoping exercise conducted by HYPREP that led to the continued presence of hydrocarbon contamination in groundwater at supposedly cleaned up sites.

HYPREP should be thankful to ERA/FoEN for this incisive independent report and focus on how to resolve the issues especially those in Lot 9 with oil bubbles from the back filled areas, Lot 11 that has been abandoned as no work is currently on-going, Lot 16 that is facing ongoing oil spills from the excavated pit that are evident for all to see.

HYPREP should also address its failure to ensure that contractors remove all toxic items utilized in the cleanup process from sites as well as the failure to prevent local people from carting away contaminated sand and other materials from cleanup sites that is similar to importing certain death and destruction into their homes.

There are also issues of lack of capacity and expertise, transparency and accountability to the public and an attempt to short circuit the recommendations of UNEP. These are the issues we expect HYPREP to respond to urgently and redress them as a matter of routine and in readiness. for the National Assembly visit.

Obazuwa Sends SOS To EDSG, Benin Monarch Over Alleged Ikoro Invasion

By The9JaTREND

Consequent upon the alleged invasion of their village by some Ijaw residents in Ikoro Community, the elders and people of Obazuwa village in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, have called on the Edo State Government, Oba of Benin and security agencies to wade into what they considered as wantom destruction of life and property by the Ikoro people.

This is even as the people of Obazuwa have deserted the village over palpable fear of further attack as the Odionwere Pa. Agidi Roland, is scooped to be laying critically at an undisclosed hospital in Benin City.

8Ozukpogieva (2nd-in-command) Pa. Michael Igbinovia was gruesomely murdered by the alleged Ikoro invaders, just as domestic animals, vehicles and houses were not spared during the attack.

Speaking with newsmen on the development, a native of Obazuwa who simply identified himself as Nosakhare Ohenhen, said that Ikoro has been inhabited over the years by the Benin people until 1987 when the Ijaw settlers allegedly drove the Benin away from the land.

He maintained that the Ijaws are not the owners of the land they are claiming, but settlers, adding that, Obazuwa village has no boundary with the Ijaws in the area.

"They have made series of attempt to invade Obazuwa even when we told them that we are peace-loving people.

"Suddenly last week here in Obazuwa, Ikoro people blocked our junction as some of the people were wearing vigilante shirts and started molesting our people and preventing them from entry Obazuwa.

"After we left the village for town that same day, Ikoro people invaded Obazuwa, burn our houses, killed our goats and also killed our Ozukpogieva (2nd-in-command) and destroyed our vehicles"

"We are appealing to the Edo State Government, Oba of Benin and the police to come to our aid", he said

The people of Osazuwa, however, denied attaching the Ijaws nor destroyed properties belonging to the people.

Another indigene of  Obazuwa, who spoke in confidence, said: “Ijaw people are claiming to be the owners of Obazuwa. We don’t know what we have done to them. They came to Obazuwa through the waterside, shooting at the indigenes of Obazuwa. They destroyed and burnt our houses, vehicles and other valuables. They have been disturbing us for a long time.

The Chairman, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Samuel Ebiwana, however, denied the allegations levelled against the Ijaw, claiming that they (the Ijaw) lost three persons to the attack by Benin youths, as many of his kinsmen were either injured or missing.

What could be considered as battle of supremacy between the two communities in Benin was rumoured to have been aided by some Indigenes of neighbouring Egbaen and Evbuolekpen  communities.

Personnel of the Nigerian Army with Hilux van was stationed a strategic point between the Osazuwa and Ikoro apparently to forestall peace.

The communal crisis if not properly checked could snowballed into killing fiestas in the affected communities as scooped by newsmen.

Traders Welfare Union Petitions Edo Market Woman Leader Over Allege N100M Diversion

ERA Accuses Shell Of Rip-Off As Court Delivered N45.7Bn Judgment In Favour Of Ejama-Ebube

By The9JaTREND

Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) welcomes the recent disclosure by Shell that it is now ready to pay the Ejama-Ebubu community in Eleme local government area of Rivers state, over $110 million or N45.7 billion naira as full and final settlement for an oil spill that occurred in the area.

ERA/FoEN, in a statement issued from the venue of its general assembly in Port Harcourt, applauded the people of Ejama-Ebubu community for their steadfastness in the pursuit of justice, remediation and restoration of their destroyed environment as well as the well-deserved compensation for the losses they have suffered.

It will be recalled that in 1970, oil spilled from Shell’s facilities polluted the community’s environment and Shell neither cleaned, restored, nor compensated the community for the losses they had suffered as a result. But in 1991, the community being dissatisfied with the failure of Shell to remediate and restore their environment filed a case before the Nigeria’s Federal High Court of justice.

Further to this legal action, in 2010 the federal high court awarded compensation to the community in the sum of N17 billion naira but Shell in its usual intransigence vigorously objected to paying the compensation awarded by the court and proceeded to drag out the case. In November 2020 the supreme court rejected Shell’s last ditch bid to set aside the 2010 compensation award. This judgement debt of N17 billion, had after 11 years of Shell’s intransigence ballooned to N180 billion.

Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, Dr. Godwin Uyi 0jo, stated that the consent judgement recently announced by the federal high court in which the indebtedness of Shell was drastically reviewed downwards to N45.7 billion is a major dubious rip-off of the community by Shell and continues the orchestrated strategy of Shell taking communities through long harrowing legal obstacles to deny them justice. It took 30 long years before Shell finally bowed to the will of the people and the dictates of justice.

Furthermore, ERA/FoEN in its statement surmised that it is only when Shell is cornered as in the present case that they turn around and make an offer for full and final settlement of all claims by communities without admitting any wrongdoing. This same scenario played out in the case of Saro-Wiwa and other vs Shell in New York in 2009, Bodo vs Shell at the industrial court in London 2016. Shell’s refusal to accept responsibility implies that the company is yet to learn any lesson from their wanton destruction of the environment and therefore unwilling to make changes to their clean-up operations from their frequent oil spills and destruction of livelihoods.

Mike Karikpo, Director of Programs of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, stated however, that this is a bitter-sweet victory as the agreed compensation payout by Shell is merely a fraction of what the company owes the Ejama-Ebubu community.  Shell has gotten away again with shortchanging the people of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

ERA/FoEN, calls on communities in the Niger Delta region impacted by reckless oil extraction to demand full accountability from every oil company. As the short-lived age of oil comes to an end soon, it is imperative that all oil impacted ecosystems across the country should be cleaned, restored and adequate compensation paid to communities and individuals whose livelihoods were impacted.

SPEECH AS DELIVERED BY BARR. MATTHEW EGBADON, PRESIDENT, ESAN OKPA INITIATIVE (EOI) ON THE MAIDEN PRESS CONFERENCE ON FRIDAY 13TH OF AUGUST, 2021 AT THE NUJ PRESS CENTRE HALL. GRA. BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.

Protocol

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Council, and indeed, all Members ,we welcome you to this maiden Press Conference of Esan Okpa Initiative (EOI).

The purpose of this press conference is twofold :

* First, to formally introduce the birth of Esan Okpa Initiative to the Press and the public; and,

*Second, to address some urgent issues affecting Esanland and its people.

Esan Okpa Initiative (EOI)

Esan Okpa Initiative is a body that is formed, and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, by three prominent Esan Associations, namely, Ikolo Esan, based in Benin City, Esan Club 30 based in Port Harcourt and Association of Esan Professionals worldwide, with headquarters in Lagos. Several other groups, associations and individuals have, since its formation, joined the EOI.

“Esan Okpa" connotes "Esan is one”. It means the “Esan People Are One."

The Esan ethnic nationality occupies five local government areas in Edo State

The Objectives of forming EOI, as stated in its Constitution include, to have a one-stop, pan-Esan Organization, which will act as a Think Tank and serve as a platform to address issues affecting Esanland and its people in the following areas:

(1) Overall development of Eanland;
(2) Ensure cohesion and unity among Esan people;
(3) Promote the welfare and general wellbaing of Esan people; and,
(4) Promote Esan language, and defend the culture and other positive Values of Esan people; by using ALL LAWFUL MEANS at its disposal In achieving the above objectives.

We need to acld that, the formation of this body (EOI), has the blessing and support of the Traclitional Institution in Esanland, the Religious leaders, Youth bodies, Women organisations, the Academia, Politicians (across party lines), Students and Community leaders in Esanland.

EOI is not a partisan body, It has as its members, politicians of the various political parties and persuasions, as well as non-politicians under Its fold.  It is an umbrella body for every Esan person.

The Constitution of EOI specifies its decision-making organs, to include: the Board of Trustees ,National Executive Council, Consultative Council of Traditional Rulers and Religious Leaders, General Assembly, and a Permanent Secretariat.

Matters of grave Concern to us as Esan People.

Some of the urgant and topical issues/challenges that face Esan people in today's Edo State, include the following:

Marginalisation of Esan People in political and other government appointments at both the State and Federal level.

It is by an act of Providence that Edo State (a near-homogenous State) was created about 30 years ago. It was created on a tripod: namely Edo South, Edo North and Edo Central senatorial districts, respectively. The Esan ethnic nationality occupies the Edo Central district.

We are of the firm view that Edo Central senatorial district has been relegated to the background by successive governments, both at the State and Federal levels, since 2008, when Mr. Adams Oshiomhole became governor of Edo State, and is yet to fair better under the Government of Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Many major political appointments to key State and Federal positions and establishments have been made by political leaders across the party lines, without taking the interest of Esan people into consideration.

Under the current political dispensation, only two Senatorial Districts, Edo South and Edo North, have effectively occupied the following important and strategic positions:

(1) Governor of the State - Edo South
(2) Deputy Governor of the State - Edo North.
(3) Ambassadorial Position - Edo South & Edo North.
(4) Hon. Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria: Two from Edo State - One from Edo South and One from Edo North.
(5) Secretary to the State Government Edo South.
(6) Chief of Staff to the Governor - rotates between Edo North & South, to mention just a few.
(7) Head of the State Civil Service.
(8) Many appointees in Key Federal and State Government Agencies.

While we rejoice with out brothers and sisters of these Senatorial District of these appointments, we implore all political leaders not to forget Edo Central Senatorial District made up of Esan people.

It is on records that the only office ceded to the Esan people - the office of the Hon. Speaker of the House of Assembly - was until recently, a subject of musical chairs, intense political manipulations and proxy war by the political leaders of the other two districts.

As it stands, Edo State political structure is standing essentially, on a bipod, instead of the tripod, which God, and even political expediency, originally designed it to be. Can anyone change the will or plan of God? God himself told us in Malachi 3:6: "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, the sons of Jacob, have not come to an end."

EOI is deeply concerned and worried about the marginalisation of Esan people in political appointments at both the State and Federal levels. We often say" ,Edo Okpa Maa Khin" meaning Edo People Are One.

Our political leaders of the moment must truly reflect this reality in their actions and decisions.

We state as a matter of fact that the current Edo State government enjoys a large following in Edo Central. We therefore appeal to the Governor of the State, to use his good offices, to ensure that Esan people in his party are not only given important positions in his government, but also encourage and support them to vie for higher political offices in the State.

In addition, we appeal to the Governor, that deserving Esan sons and daughters should be accorded recognition by appointment into the upper echelons of the public and civil services of the State. We plead for an Edo State that is run on the basis of equity, fairness and justice to all its constituent parts.

We are optimistic that the current imbalance in the political and other strategic appointments in the state will be addressed by His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Need for Edo State Government to Reintroduce the Stud of Esan lan-ua-e in the School Curriculum.

An Esan adage says, You are lost if you cannot speak the language of your place or people.Needless to state that language is an integral part of the culture of a people. EOI is concerned that the Esan language is fast going into extinction, as many of our people, particularly the young ones, including those who live in Esanland, cannot speak the language, let alone write in it .

The situation is so worrisome, to the extent that many of our people cannot string a simple sentence together in Esan language, without mixing it up with mostly English language.

As a body, we have identified and outlined programmes and events we shall be embarking on soon to sensitize and rekindle our people's interest in speaking and writing in Esan language. We have plans to promote Esan language and culture among the Esan people, including those living outside the State, by setting up mini Esan language clinics in places like Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja and in the Diaspora.

We wish to request the Edo State government to reintroduce the study of Esan language in its school curriculum at the primary and secondary school levels in Esanland. In the past, Esan language was taught in schools, and was even part of the West African School Certificate Examination Syllabus. We have adequate texts and books in Esan Language to support its teaching and teachers in schools in Esan Land.

We will make a similar request to the State-owned University, Abrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, to, as a matter of urgency, introduce the study of Esan and other Edo languages and culture as part of the programme at its Department of Language Studies. It is anomalous that AAU's Department of Languages does not teach Esan or any of the Edo languages, but teaches French, Russian and Spanish. It is on records, that the University is probably the only one with a  Language department that foes not have a programme on the study of the language of its catchment area language department that does not have a programme on the study of the language of its catchment area.

As a body, EOI shall be ready to make its contributions in whatever way it can, to support the State government and the University in the study of Esan language and culture.

Frightening State of Insecurity in and around Esan land.

EOI is concerned about insecurity on the highway between Benin City and Ekpoma; and particularly within Esanland. Our people can no longer travel to Benin City, the state capital, to transact business, without the risk of falling into the hands of kidnappers and bandits.

We wonder whether the security forces have given up, and allow these criminal gangs to operate freely without inhibitions day and night, on this road.

In addition, the entire Esanland has been seized by the jugular by these marauders and kidnappers, who have killed scores, maimed, raped our women, destroyed farmlands and property, and induced payment of ransoms by their hapless victims.

No day has passed in recent times, without reports of these bandits wreaking havoc on innocent and law-abiding Esan people, many of whom have been forced to abandon their farmlands and trades for fear of being raped, maimed, killed or kidnapped and made an object of ransom negotiations and payments.

The situation has become dire, as our people, who are subsistent farmers, are now faced with scarcity of farm produce and high prices of the few available goods. Famine is imminent, as farmers have abandoned their farms, as the bandits have laid siege to all farmlands and major roads in Esanland.

While we, in EOI, appreciate that the issue of insecurity is a nationwide challenge, the seemingly helpless situation of our people in Esanland, in the face of coordinated attacks and abductions, is of grave concern to us.

A major issue that should be addressed, as a matter of priority, by the security agencies, is the allegation making the rounds, that when some of these marauders and kidnappers are caught and handed over to them, they are not made to face the full wrath of the law by taking them to court, but instead are released together with their weapons.

While we commend the efforts of the State government, Security Agencies and Vigilante groups in trying to combat the menacing wave of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the State, we implore the authorities to regard the Benin-Ekpoma road and Esanland in particular, as areas of “special interest or flash points” because these two areas are major gateways to the Northern and Eastern parts of Nigeria, with streams of regular heavy human and vehicular traffic on the roads.

We believe the primary responsibility of any government, is the security and welfare of its people, and therefore implore the Edo State Governor to rejig the security architecture of the State, and ensure the following, as matters of importance:

(1) |The bushes, on both sides of the road between Benin City and Ekpoma, should be cleared, to ensure that the bandits and kidnappers do not have a ready hiding abode, from where they launch their ambush and attack unsuspecting road users;

(2) Local Government Councils in the State must be made more accountable for the security lapses within their areas of jurisdiction;

(3) More responsibilities and support should be given to Traditional Rulers on security issues within their domain;

(4) The State Government should also, as a matter of exigency, enact the State Anti-open-grazing Law, in line with the decision of the Governors of the Southern States of Nigeria that such laws should be in put in place by the Southern States by September, 2021; and,

(5) The armed herdsmen should be given a time line within which they must exit the forests and farmlands in Edo State or alse be forced out.

Industrialization of Esanland.

On the 27th of August 2021 (a few days from now), Edo State will be 30 years old since its creation as a State. It is on records that since the State was created, not a single government owned industry has been established in Esan land. We would like to commend the Edo State Governor on his efforts and desire to make the State one of the Africa's top 20 economies by 2050, as he stated recently when he met the United Nations Team in Abuja. We appeal to the Governor to set up agro-based industries in Esanland, which has a comparative advantage in various agricultural resources that would feed such enterprises.

We will never be tired of talking about the abandoned Cassava Processing Factory at Uromi, which was started during the regime of Chief Lucky lgbinedion, but later abandoned.

It is our view that if rehabilitated, the factory, which is a potential goldmine that has been allowed to rot by successive governments, would provide both direct and indirect employment for our people. EO! is ready to partner with the State government to reactivate this factory or any other agro based industry in Esanland.

State of Affairs in Ambrose Alli Universi Ek»om

EOI has followed, with bated breath, the unfolding developments at the State-owned Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. While the jury is still out about the full implications of the State government's recent direct intervention in the running of the Institution, we would like to appeal to the stakeholders of the University, that they must not, by acts of commission or omission, fritter away the solid achievements which the University has made since its inception, and which have brought glory and honour to Edo State.

We are, however, in support of any efforts to bring transparency and accountability into the University administration. EO! hereby requests the State Government to issue and make public the White Paper on the Visitation Panel report submitted to government in March 2021. All those functionaries of the University and others, whose activities have adversely affected the University, must be brought to book, to serve as a deterrent to others.

We appreciate your presence at this Conference; and hope you will give maximum publicity to the issues raised herein.

EOI looks forward to having a cordial, fruitful and lasting relationship with you, members of the Forth Estate of the Realm, and the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in particular, in the pursuit of our objectives.

Going forward, our doors shall be open, and you, Gentlemen and Ladies, should feel free to monitor EOI activities, ask questions for clarification when in doubt, while at the same time, accord us the minimum privilege, deserving of a body as ESAN OKPA INITIATIVE.
