#EndSARS Protest: Civil Society Effects Release of 11Yrs Old Boy

President, Talakawa Parliament, a civil society group and members, Edo State Judicial Panel on #EndSARS, Comrade Kola Edokpayi has effect the release of a 11 years old boy, Master Gift Osayuhi who was arrested and paraded along side with 125 others by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Kokumo at the State Command.

In a chat with The9jaTrend, Comrade Edokpayi said "the boy whose picture went viral on social media recently for allegedly joining some miscreants to break into Oba Market Police Station, took their police uniform, wore it and declared himself as the new IG of Police during the #ENDSARS protest was released to us after we undertook  to rehabilitate and reform him.

Comrade Edokpayi stressed, "The young boy said his dream is to become the IG of Police and we also undertook to ensure the boy is giving a proper education so as to help him achieve his dream.

"We also met with his mother who claimed she is a widow and takes care of the children alone; the little boy usually assist her to sell water and drinks in Ring Road.

"We sincerely thank Edo State Commissioner of Police and Edo State Ministry of Justice for the kind understanding  and cooperation," he opined.

ERA/FoEN Urges Nigeria Government To Diversify National Energy Sources

Executive Director of the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN),  Mr. Godwin Uyi Ojo, has called on the Nigeria government to put an end to fossil fuel development and show commitment for renewable energy options and grow to become the renewable energy hub for (West) Africa, 

Mr. Ojo also called for the diversification of national energy sources so as to encourage state and non-state actors, including NGOs and energy cooperatives; to develop mini-grid and off-grid solar energy systems to promote greater energy access by all.

The ERA/FoEN Executive Director made the call on the occasion of a discussion on life beyond oil with the theme “Towards a Post Petroleum Economy For Nigeria” organised by the ERA/FoEN in Benin City, Edo state capital.

Going further, he asked the government to "halt investments in oil and gas sector and channel public finance, loans and subsidies from oil and gas sector and divestment of such funds to renewable energy sector.”

He called on Nigeria’s Green Bond, and the Bank of Industry to support and step up investments to individuals and Community Energy Cooperatives in the renewable energy sector, while encouraging the renewable energy sector through subsidies, grants, and tax holidays including elimination or reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from the current level of 7.5% as a crucial step to encouraging the transition.

He encouraged the government to "demonstrate political will and reduce corruption for renewable energy to thrive in Nigeria.”

Mr. Ojo advocated for the “inclusion of renewable energy technologies and climate change in the school curriculum to empower the youths and make them solutions to the national energy poverty.”

Going forward, Mr. Ojo demanded: “Inclusion of renewable energy technologies and climate change in the school curriculum to empower the youths and make them solutions to the national energy poverty.  

“Increase advocacy and policy engagement with the government to embrace renewable energy and take action to put an end to oil and gas development.

“Encourage a national renewable energy policy that recognizes state and non-state actors in a decentralized energy production system as crucial for realizing the country’s existing huge gaps in citizens’ access to electricity.

“Demand federal, state and local governments’ involvement in the provision of mini-grids and off-grids solar systems and other renewable energy options.

“Conduct practical demonstrations and cluster community energy projects in the communities to promote access to cleaner energiesCommunities.”

In his submission,  the Executive Director of Foundation For Good Governance and Social Change, Barr. Austin Osakue, said that a post petroleum economy is feasible and practicable.

He accused the Nigeria elites of conspiring against all efforts to ensure that renewable energy is feasible as it is not friendly to their interest. “A visionary leadership does not exist in Nigeria to overlook the inconvenience of today so as to have the convenience of tomorrow.”

Other discussants on the occasion were Chief Saint Emma Pii, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ERA/FoEN;  Barr. Nurudeen Ogbara, a legal luminary; Habiba Ali, a renewable energy entrepreneur and Adesuwa Jang, Project Officer, ERA/FoEN.

Edo State Police Command Parades 2 Armed Robbers, 4 Hoodlums and 120 Suspects

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Police Command, CP Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, has paraded 2 Armed Robbers and 124 suspects arrested from different offences across Edo State.

Briefing newsmen in Benin City, CP Kokumo said the 126 suspects were arrested for Store Breaking, Looting, Arson, Escape from Lawful Custody and other Offences.

 

The Commissioner said,  “EndSARS protest, was consequently hijacked by hoodlums and mobs who went berserk wreaking havoc in Benin metropolis, burnt down police stations, carted away arms and ammunition, raped women in some areas, killed policemen on their gory path to destruction, freed convicted criminals and felons, looted businesses and extorted innocent Nigerians".

The Edo Police CP added that, "as the looting and destruction was taking place, the Police and other security agencies mustard their acts together and were able to arrest some of the arsonists, looters and escapees.

"Out of the 126 suspects arrested in the state, 28 were among those who broke into Nigeria Customs Service Warehouse WAEC Road, Off Benin-Auchi Road, Aduwawa Benin City.

"In Blessed Doris-Dey Warehouse, along Benin-Agbor Road, Benin City, 16 Suspects has been arrested. The hoodlums who looter the palliatives and medical equipments at Medical Stores Drugs Hall, along Medical Stores Road. Benin City,  45 suspected were arrested.

"The Olam Nigeria PLC Private Warehouse, located at Abico Junction, Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City that were also looted, 13 Suspects has so far been arrested, while 10 suspects has been arrested in connected of the broken into the Correctional Centre at Benin/Sapele Road and Oko in the state capital.

In another development, the state police commissioner, CP Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, paraded Kingsley Adoko ‘m’,  Esther Julius ‘f’, Adams Shaka ‘m’, Audu Mustafa ‘m’, Divine Mackson ‘m’, Michael Aigbedion ‘m’, Franca Samuel ‘f’ and Peter John (alias Atorodo) ‘m’ who were hobnobbing on how to break into Comrade Philip Shaibu  Town Hall at Jattu, in Etsako Centre local government area of the state. "They were however arrested by some vigilantes and policemen of Jattu Police Division before any damage could be done," the commissioner said.

The CP added, "At Oliha Market Junction, Benin City, two armed robbers named Michael Peter ‘m’ and OZ Esi ‘m’ were arrested by officers of the Nigerian Army, attached to 4 Brigade Headquarters, Benin City for allegedly attempting to snatch a Honda Civic Car with Reg. No. AA-261-AY from one Mr. John Destiny.

"Part of the suspects arrested are four hoodlums; Charles Okoeguale ‘m’, Ojo Osamiemwenfan Igbinoba ‘m’, Gift Osayiwu ‘m’ and Osasumwen Imanawe ‘m’, who were seen with Police rifles, uniforms and other accoutrements carted away by hoodlums who invaded the several police stations during “ENDSARS" protest. 

Items recovered from the suspects were Five AK 47 rifles, Two locally made exhibit guns, One locally made gun, One Lexus 330 SUV with Reg. No. KWL-205-AZ, One Toyota Camry Saloon car with Reg. No. LSD-231-GD, Two bags of 50kg and one 25kg of rice and Twenty four creates of assorted drinks.

Convene National Emergency Meeting on Hoarding Palliatives - Chief Eholor Urges President Buhari

A Human Right Activist and President,  One Love Foundation, also known as Observer General of Nigerian politics, Chief Patrick Eholor has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a national emergency meeting on hoarding Palliatives to question why food items were hidden by state governors without letting them get to the masses.

Chief Patrick Eholor made the call while fielding questions from newsmen in Benin City. He noted that there was hunger in the land and wondered what could be the reasons for the governors to store the palliatives without sharing them to the masses.

He said though he was not out to incite anybody or encourage the youths to go on looting spree as it was very wrong; and condemned in totality the storing of the palliatives at the detriment of the people.

The human right activist emphasized that it was more wrong for the government to have kept such huge amount of food items, pointing out that the incident happened not just in Edo State but almost across the 36 states of the federation including Federal Capital Territory.

"You have over 11 Million Almajaris in the northern part of Nigeria, begging for food and shelter and state governors dared to hide tones  and tones of food items, with some even rotting. Even Skill empowerment tools such as sewing machines, motor cycles, medications, when common malaria is ravaging the ordinary people. What about condoms? so there will be emergency for infections before governors  give out population explosion preventive kits to the People especially the urban poor?".

He equally took a swipe at the tagging of protesters in the recent #EndSARS crisis, with negative names such as "Hoodlums, Hooligans, Thugs, Looters" stressing that such act will not drive the process for change especially the much needed positive image for Nigerians abroad.

"You can not call your citizens hoodlums. You can not  call your Citizens hooligans. If we arrive at the shores of other countries, they will look at us as hooligans and thugs! Who can be more hooligans than members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, who can more hooligan than those who collect all sorts of illegal revenue from commercial drivers, wear agbada in the day and campaign for votes, for politicians. We must have to rephrase these words because they have been trending, going viral, with the Public chanting hoodlums!", he stated.  

The activist observed  that  "#EndSARS" theme for the Protest was a preamble to drive the process for change; attitudinal change for all Nigerians".

He maintained that "if you are a custom Officer who have been taking money to shortchange the system, you are SARS, be reformed. If you are an immigration officer and you are issuing passports without due process, you are SARS. If you are a top ranking police officer, including the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Assistant Inspector General, etc and you don't care about the welfare of the men and officers of the Police Force, you are worse than the worst SARS.

Chief Eholor also noted that "prison officers who abuse inmates, embezzle funds for upkeep of prisoners, take the money home to feed their families are all members of the dreaded defunct SARS.

"What is SARS? SARS has so many meanings, ...If you are an Official of the Federal Road Safety Corps and you extort money from motorists under the guise of ensuring that carnages are eradicated from the highways, you are worse than SARS.

"What about the People?  If you are a Citizen of this Country and you are not behaving yourself. You aren't making us proud as a citizen, you are a SARS. If you are a legislator and you are supposed to make laws and carry out oversight functions to strengthen good governance and you receive monthly 29 million naira and emoluments, while the ordinary police man who secures all of us, holds gun 24 hours, earn peanut,  and you are not working for the Constituents, you are worse than SARS."

The human right activist further stated, "This is just the beginning of the Change process. If you are INEC Officials and you connive to rig elections, you are SARS. And if you are a Pastor and you are not practicing what you preach at the altar, you are SARS.

"So Nigeria has lots of SARS. Now, we are going to gradually approach all the SARS which surround us as a Nation and make the country a better place", he opined.

PFN National President Tells Nigerian Youth To Give Peace A Chance

Rev. (Dr.) Felix Omobude, National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has charged the #EndSARS protesters nationwide to withdraw from the streets, saying that their agitations have since reached the presidency.

Dr. Omobude, the General Superintendent of Gospel Light International Ministries (GLIM) - New Covenant Gospel Church who is also the National President of PFN, said the genuine protesters have made their points loud and clear enough for those in authority to hear them and do the needful.

"You should stop your street protest for now to prevent the hoodlums who have hijacked the hitherto peaceful exercise to continue with their condemnable acts of criminalities which include vandalism, arson, looting, killing, rape, amongst others.

Dr. Omobude, who stated this while unveiling the forthcoming Christian programme, named Bible Alive Believers International Convention (BABIC) with the theme "Triumph of Hope", however urged the government to be circumspect by urgently attending to the demands of the #EndSARS protesters.

The PFN President condemned the shooting and alleged killing of some peaceful protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State by security agents, and called on the military high command to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the  perpetrators to book.

He commiserated with the families of all those who have lost their lives during the nationwide protest, calling on the government to ensure that their death are not in vain.

Speaking on BABIC 2020, holding at His Glory of New Covenant Gospel Church in Benin City, Dr. Omobude disclosed that several top Christian clerics and delegates from across the world are expected to attend the international event.

Some of the eminent church leaders billed to deliver messages at the convention include former chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Pastor Poju Oyemade, Apst. Lawrence Achudume, amongst others.

He said during the 5-day church event which commences this Wednesday, prayers and supplications will be offered to God in favour of Nigeria as a nation and Nigerians as a people for God's intervention in the ugly incidents that have befallen the country and its citizens.

"Through prayers and supplications, we have triumphed against covid-19 and we have the hope that with God on our side, we shall also triumph over all the challenges presently bedevilling our dear nation.

"Special prayers will be offered to God to help Nigeria overcome her pressing needs and problems, particularly the challenges of economic recession, terrorism, violence, crimes, kidnapping, corruption and other vices.

"It is our expectation that Nigerians in particular and Nigeria as a whole will witness the mighty visitation of God during and after the convention as issues bothering on the welfare and safety of this nation as well as her progress and development will be handled in prayers.

"There shall be a harvest of miracles, signs and wonders. We have God's assurance that the lame shall walk, the blind shall see, the deaf shall hear and the whole captives set free. There shall be healing galore for all manners of people and the church shall be strengthened," Dr. Omobude added.

Looting of Edo Medical Stores Sin Before God, Cleric Admonishes

A Christian cleric and General Overseer of Chapel of Deliverance International Ministry Incorporated, Apostle Mike Agbonkhese has called on Edo People to be content with what they have as those who broke into Edo State Medical Stores and private warehouses in Benin City were not working for the growth of the State describing the action as a sin before God Almighty.

Apostle Agbonkhese gave the admonition while delivering a homily at  a combined Service of the Ministry at the church headquarters in Benin City last Sunday.

The clergy noted that it would have been more credible for those who broke into the medical store to expose the alleged hoarding of the palliatives to the whole world rather than looting the items, adding that such exposure was capable of forcing a guilty party to resign from office.

"Let's say the truth, will the palliatives stolen from the warehouse sustain you for the next one year? Absolutely no! There is a cause attached to anything taken by force, whether you believe me or not, there is price you must pay for it," he emphasised.

While admonishing the congregation that God Almighty will always bless the labour of our hands if really we believe in Him, the man of God said: "God said, He will bless the labour of our hands. Taking what does not belong to you is a sin before God. If God cannot bless you, who will?

"Corruption has been in existence in the world, even in the bible; it was corruption that made God to drive Lucifer out of His throne.

"Corruption has been part of our system.   Nigeria's past presidents made efforts to fight corruption. Therefore, President Buhari should not relent in fighting corruption. If he feels he cannot continue to fight corruption, I think the best thing he can do for Nigeria is to resign and allow who is ready to fight corruption to come on board.

"The problem we are having is that, you can't see yourself doing something meaningful; you must have time for yourself, if you don't have value for yourself, no man will. The bible told us that, what a man thinketh in his heart so he is," he advised.

Apostle Agbonkhese eulogised the genuine protesters for embarking on the clean up and evacuating the burnt tyres that littered the streets of Nigeria by the hoodlums, saying "this shows  that the genuine protesters were focused on their agitation, they are good citizens of Nigeria who mean well for the nation," he concluded.

Edo PDP Chieftain Commend Obaseki, Shaibu Maturity in Handling #ENDSARS Protest

Former Commissioner and a PDP Leader in Edo State, Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe has commended the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu for the series of timely and proactive measures deployed towards ensuring the #EndSARS protest was nipped in the bud before it escalated beyond control.

Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe made the commendation during a chat with The9jaTrend in Benin City.

 Hon. Tenebe, a member of Governor Obaseki's  Transition Committee  in the State, who spoke on behalf of PDP Leaders of Thought in the state said, Governor Obaseki and Shaibu demonstrated  the stuff they are  made of as a crisis manager in the manner they acted promptly to diffuse tension, noting that their quick response and  ability to reach out to the #EndSARS protesters and the other agitators helped to avert plunging the state into complete anarchy.

According to Hon. Tenebe, a former commissioner in the state "the urgency with which Governor Obaseki and Shaibu tackled the request of the #EndSARS protesters, including the series of meetings they held with different segments of youth groups in the state, which resulted in assurances from the top echelon of the protesters, was a masterstroke in calming frayed nerves and the guarantee for a peaceful atmosphere.

"Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Shaibu had, at the onset of the #EndSARS protest, showed empathy with the protesters by identifying with their cause while also urging for peaceful protests.

"The Edo state government later imposed a 24 hour curfew on the state when it appeared as if the protest had been hijacked by hoodlums who unleashed terror and violence on vital organs of the state, including two jailbreaks in one day."

Hon. Tenebe  who solicited for  continuous support for the Obaseki, Shaibu by Edo people noted that, "the people are satisfied with the way and manner Governor Obaseki and Shaibu handled the #EndSARS protest.

The former Edo commissioner further said "proficiency displayed by the duo of Governor Obaseki and his deputy in crisis management is a testimony that their recent success at the Edo poll was not a fluke but a reassurance of solidarity by Edo people."

He said Edo people in general and their leaders in particular have explicit confidence in the ability of Governor  Obaseki and Comrade Philip Shaibu  to govern the state.

Stay Clear From #ENDSARS Protest - Chief Eholor Warns Nnamdi Kanu, Says President Buhari’s Speech Is Uninspiring

Global President of One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor has condemned violence, looting and destruction of properties across Nigeria due to the unrest caused by the #ENDSARS protest, describing the situation as unfortunate and regrettable.

Eholor, while chatting with The9jaTrend, said he also observed with dismay the hijacking of the protest by irresponsible and divisive elements like the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu whose utterances and unguided vituperation led to vandalization of properties, thuggery and looting of both government and private properties in disguise of protest across Nigeria.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu cannot come in disguise to hijack the genuine #ENDSARS protest. We will not allow him to do that. People fought for one Nigeria.

"We will  remain one Nigeria, our problem is not about tribe or ethnicity, either is it about bad leadership. Now the people have finally wake up to say they want their right because their right is their life. That’s what we should focus on not on Nnamdi Kanu. 

"For me, I don’t take him serious. If you’re a serious person who wants to agitate for your people you should be here for the struggle just like as I am here for the struggle, that’s what they call a patriot and a democrat. Kanu is just a rabble-rouser.

“It’s most imperative to note that, I supports in all sincerity the betterment of Nigeria especially with governance as agitated for by the youths, but it is quite unfortunate that unscrupulous elements including those outside the country are making inciting and divisive statements, thereby hijacking the process to unleash mayhem and anarchy by creating unnecessary pandemonium.

"Following the unfortunate event of the Leeki shootings on unarmed #ENDSARS protesters which was condemned by all including myself, as I share in the plights and grievances of the youths especially those that lost their lives, but it’s inhumane and barbaric to destroy properties of individuals and government as witnessed across the country.

“The youths should embrace dialogue or continue protesting in a peaceful and civil manner like I did at the US Embassy. Destruction of properties won’t give us the needed results.”

In a related development, the Global President of One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor said the speech of President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday was boring, uninspiring and unpresidential.

“At a time like this, I expected the President to act like a father by bringing the youths to a round table. As usual, it was uninspiring an boring. Lives were lost due to the Lekki shootings and the President failed to say a word on it," he concluded.

#EndSARS: Edo Youths Assures of 60 Per Cent Representation in New Cabinet

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has assured Edo state youths of 60 per cent representation in his new cabinet. 

The governor gave the assurance during an interactive meeting with youth groups at Government House, in Benin City, on Thursday, 22nd October, 2020.

He said, the crisis in the state following the hijack of the #ENDSARS protests is politically motivated.

"The crisis in Edo is not the #ENDSARS protests but political as the government supports the #ENDSARS protests. Just as we defeated them in the election, we will contain them. With my #ENDSARS people, we are going to arrest them and put them back to the zoo.

"I am worried about the level of criminality. Parts of the fight we had in our first term was the issue of maintaining law and order and fighting criminality as lots of these criminals hid under the cover of the godfathers who called them their infantry, lions and tigers.

"Without law and order, there can't be economic growth as no one will be able to invest. You could see them in the last few days, the way they came out pouncing on people’s private properties.”

According to him, his administration recognises the role played by youths in his re-election, adding that his administration plans to appoint 60 per cent of youths under the age of 40 in his second term in office.

The governor said his government has no problem with peaceful protests, adding, "I asked the police to give the protesters protection but the leadership of the police have a choice to either obey me or not as I don't have power to fire the Police Commissioner.

"Our position as a government is to support the position of the #ENDSARS protesters as their demand is legitimate," assuring the youths that he is on their side.

He added: "The Panel of Inquiry is the first step to go and we have instructed that the number of members be increased to 20 to accommodate other groups. The panel has 90 days and I urge you all to give evidence to the panel which should be documented as it will enable us to work as we implement the report of the panel.

"Our security arrangements in the country must reflect our Federal system as I can't be a governor of a state and not be able to hire and fire my Commissioner of Police, but the #ENDSARS has helped us start the process.

"The Public Works Volunteer (PUWOV) is a version of our neighborhood watch in the state. We have 900 people being trained. 1,100 others will be trained after this set and another 20 persons per ward will be hired to be in charge of public safety.

"As the governor, I will do everything within my power to have strong internal security as we need to protect ourselves."

Representative of the #ENDSARS protesters, Comrade Abraham Oviawe, said the peaceful protesters' demand emanated from the pains Nigerians have suffered over the years.

He thanked the governor for constituting the Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the excesses of the disbanded members of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), urging him to ensure that the Panel does the right job for Edo people.

Oviawe urged the Nigeria Police to be civil in its dealings with members of the public, adding that the leadership of the Police will check the mode of operation of the anti-cultism unit of the Force.

"We urge your government to re-constitute the neighborhood watch and ensure the recruitment is open and transparent as it will assist and help community policing in Edo State," he added.

Representative of Civil Society Organisations in Edo State, Curtis Ogbebor, expressed appreciation to the governor for ensuring the lives of Edo citizens are safe.

He urged the state government to ensure it arrests those who fired shots leading to the death of peaceful protesters at Kingsquare in Benin City, Edo State.

Representative of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Steven Imafidon, said sixty per cent of victims of police brutality are students as their agitation is for the government to look into the welfare of police officers.

The meeting had in attendance leaders and representatives of over 30 youth organisations in the state.

BREAKING NEWS: Gov. Obaseki Relaxes Curfew

The Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki. has relaxed the curfew imposed on the state.

The Governor said the move is to contain the activities of hoodlums who have hijacked the peaceful protests in a bid to end police brutality across Nigeria.

While briefing the youths in Government House, Benin on Thursday 22nd October, 2020. Governor Obaseki said the curfew will now be relaxed from 4pm to 6pm daily for the next 72 hours for reevaluation and further actions.

The curfew takes effect from Friday, 23rd October, 2020.

You Can Not Hijack #ENDSARS Protest. - BSM Warns Kanu

Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) has called on the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to desist from fuelling the looting, burning and destruction that has characterised the hijack of the #ENDSARS protest, and therefore thrown its weight behind the promoters of the protest which has been a common decimal in many parts of the country while warning.

In a press statement issued and signed by the President, Benin Solidarity Movement,  BSM, Worldwide, Elder Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo and the Acting Secretary, Pastor Osayuki Uhimwen, has also warned Nnamdi Kanu and his cohort that any attempt by him to play smart would be vehemently resisted by the BSM.

“The agitation is legitimate and the agitators are well coordinated and focused their resilience which can change the history of the nation for the better is worthy of commendation.

“We therefore take strong objection to the hijack of the agitation recently by some low life individuals who resort to looting, arson, robbery, rape, car jacking and the rest.

“The latest narrative in this show of shame is the jailbreaks in Benin City, the Edo State capital; the burning, looting and destruction to the properties.

“However, reports pieced together by our intelligence unit put the blame on all these phantom attack on the utterances of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-acclaimed leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“We of the BSM wish to warn Kanu that his days of mischief making are over and he should tow a part of decency and loyalty to the Nigerian state. Anything short of that will spell doom for him and his army of renegades.

“If Kanu is so desirous of destroying anything he should go and destroy his father’s property in Abia State. Also his idiotic claim that Edo State is part of Biafra should stop henceforth. Edo State is not part of Biafra and would never be.

“We need to tell him that a monkey that claims to be smart in the forest must thank his stars that there are enough trees in the forest to cover his trail," the statement opined.

#EndSARS: We Condemns violence, killings in Niger-Delta - South-South Group Emphasised

A non-political group in the Niger-Delta region, the South-South Legacy Group, has condemned the violence and killings that have trailed the #EndSARS protest in the region and other states across the country, and declared the ugly incidents as unacceptable.

In a press statement signed by the spokespersons of the group, Osagie Aiguobasinwin and Hon. Camilus Okosun, the South-South Legacy Group deplored last Monday's protests in Benin City which rendered the ancient City postrate

‎The South-South Legacy Group, which activities focus on continued peaceful co-existence, growth and development of states in the South-South region and the country, threw its weight behind the peaceful protests and the actualisation of the five-point demand of the protesters.

"We cannot continue to denying the fact that the state of the nation, politically and economically does not put smiles on the faces of the people at this point in time which may have justified the upward review of the 5-point demands to accommodate issues like  the SARS unit of the police force scraped, erring members tried, convicted and dismissed or jailed as the case may be; end police brutality and victimisation of Nigerian youth and other innocent Nigerians, remodel the Nigerian Police Force to be people friendly and work for the people as proper reorientation is recommended, compensation to be paid to the victims of scrapped SARS living or dead and better pay packet for the officers and men of the police force, amongst others.

"The point that the protesters might have left out for consideration “is the inability to quickly know that for the Federal Government to have quickly acceded to their demands, is an indication for dialogue, even when the peaceful protest is still ongoing.

"It more heart breaking and unacceptable to us as a people for anyone to turn the rein of terror against our people. We will not accept this and Edo, as well as the other South-South states’ people both at home, across Nigeria and in Diaspora should stand up in unison to condemn the criminal invasion, destruction and setting ablaze of police stations in Benin."

"As a group, we stand up to condemn the invasion of the two correctional facilities in Benin as well as releasing  of inmates into the society. These hoodlums made away with ammunition and other firearms. You will want to ask for what intention would it be put into if not for criminality.

"The actions of the miscreants who hid under the aegis of #ENDSARS protests on Monday, 19th October, 2020 in Benin City is unacceptable, barbaric, lawless, inhumane, and a far cry from the reason, principle and philosophy of the #ENDSARS agitation should be condemned.

We urged the protesters to go to the negotiating table adding that the economic and political situation may have necessitated the elongation of the demands of the protesting youth.

"There is no denying the fact that the state of the nation, politically and economically does not put smiles on the faces of the people at this point in time which may have justified the upward review of the 5point demands to accommodate issues like electricity, hike in fuel pump price, corruption, among many others.

"Don't forget that no war ever ended on the battlefield, rather issues are negotiated in the interest of peace, concord and development, which one has expected the organizers to have keyed into to press home their other points,"

While commending Edo State Government for the measures put in place to douse the tension and restore order to the state, the group called for the enforcement of the curfew within the rules of engagement of security agencies in accordance with global best practices.

Federal High Court Restrains Rev. Arc. Nnimmo Bassey As ERA/FoEN's Board Chairman For Conflict of Interest

Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has sacked and restrained Rev. Acr. Nnimmo Bassey from parading   or   holding   out himself   as   the   Chairman   of   Board  of   Trustees   of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) pending the hearing of the motion on notice and also specifically restrains Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)from recognizing or acknowledging him as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

In the case of Incorporated Trustees of Environmental Rights Development Foundation (ERA/FoEN) & 2 ORS v. Rev. Arc. Nnimmo Bassey & 3 Ors (FHC/L/CS/FHC/1421/2020), the applicants counsel President Aigbokhan, Esq argued in its motion ex parte that the 1st Defendant which is Rev. Dr. Nnimmo Bassey is currently the Executive Director and Board Chairman of Incorporated Trustee of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) (a leading environmental and food sovereignty advocacy group) and at the same time the chairman of Environmental Rights Development 

Foundation (a foremost environmental advocacy group in Africa) before he was removed by a General Assembly on 7th October 2020 on the ground of conflict of interest.

He argued that the affiliate members’ decision on 7th October 2020 should be affirmed pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

He reiterated that the activities of Incorporated Trustee of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) led by Rev Nnimmo Bassey is questionably in conflict with that of Environmental Rights Development Foundation (ERA) which he founded alongside Dr. Uyi Ojo and Oronto Douglas in 2005.

The court thetefore recognized the new board as constituted by its affiliate members and led by Chief Saint Emma Pii and Dr. Uyi Ojo as the chairman and secretary respectively. The case was adjourned to 29th October 2020 for hearing of motion on notice.

Police Declares Osakue Victor Osas Wanted Over Murder Of Two PDP Youth Executive Members In Edo

The Edo State Police Command has declared Osakue Victor Osas, Ward 7 Youth Leader of the Egor local government area executives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wanted over the gruesome murder of  Andrew Iyekekpolo, Youth Vice Chairman and Clement Odigie Youth Secretary of the party.

 The spokesman for the Command, SP Bello Kontongs disclosed to journalists in Benin that operatives of Adolor Police Division received a distress call stating that there is fight involving some youths of PDP at a stakeholders meeting of the party which took place on the 20^th of October, 2020 at 500hour at the party secretariat of the local government area.

 

SP Kotongs stated that the Command quickly swing into action by mobilizing some men of the Adolor Police Division to the sense of the stakeholders meeting, and discovered that everybody has since disserted the area. But information available to the police personnel revealed that there was early fight involving some youths of the party who were agitating for the resignation and dissolution of Victor-led youth executive committee and in the process the youth leader, Osakue Victor Osas sustained injuries as regard to the fight.

 

According to SP Bello Kontongs, on enquiries to ascertain the whereabouts of Victor and other youth members of the party involved the fracas, nobody was willing to disclose any information to the police personnel.

 

SP Kontongs further stated that at about 600hours of the same day, operatives of Adolor Police Division of the command discovered two bodies of the victims simply identified as that of Andrew Iyekekpolo and Andrew Odigie, Ward 7 Youth Vice Chairman and Ward 7 Youth Secretary respectively of the Egor chapter of the PDP at the resident of Osakue Victor Osas at No. 22, Adolor Road, Off New Lagos Road, Benin City following a distress call.

 

SP Kontongs further stated that though residents in the area declined comment fearing possible police arrests, the bullet-ridden bodies were discovered in the residence of Victor prompting investigators to declare Osakue Victor Osas wanted.

 

He added that full scale investigation will unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the two persons at the resident of Victor, and that no arrests had been made yet at the time of this briefing but an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

 

According to Police Image Maker, the murder is a capital offence under Sections 316 and 319 of the Nigerian Criminal Code.

 

The Command hereby call on members of the public with useful information that would lead to the arrest of fleeing Osakue Victor Osas to contact the nearest police station across the country as police intensify a manhunt for him.

 

Meanwhile, when our reporter visited Victors’ residence at No. 22, Adolor Road, Benin City, it was discovered that he (Victor) is the only occupant of the building which he inherited from his late adopted parent.

 

On investigation by our reporter, it was discovered that when police came to Victor’s residence with ambulance and discovered the bodies of Clement Iyekekpolo and Andrew Odigie inside, somebody within the vicinity quickly called Victor to inform him that police had arrived at his house with an ambulance and discovered the bodies of Clement and Odigie inside, and when Victor was trying to further ask question, the phone went off.

Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the infiltration of #EndSARS protests by vagabonds which resulted the sad events at the Benin Prison, Oko Prison, Ugbekun Police Station as well as other areas around the metropolis on Monday, 19th October.

In a press statement issued and signed by the party State Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare said, "the fake #EndSARS protesters have unfortunately forced the hand of government into taking measures such as declaring a 24 hour curfew effective 4pm today, Monday, October 19, 2020, in our state so that law and order can be restored. The sad events at the Benin prison and Oko Prison as well as other areas around the metropolis on Monday can lead to a total breakdown of law and order.

"As a responsible and compassionate political party, we did not only support the #EndSARS protests, but encouraged our supporters and members to join in the legitimate protest.

"We welcomed the dissolution of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police and supported the call for immediate steps to completely overhaul and restructure the entire police architecture to engender professionalism, adherence to rule of law and respect for the fundamental rights of Nigerians. Our decision to support the #EndSARS movement is in order to bring about a better Nigeria, where justice and freedom from oppression prevail.

"We commended the resolve of the protesters to continue the protest despite the attack on them last week by hoodlums, who killed and wounded some of them. Having failed to stop the protesters, it appears that the thugs and hoodlums have changed tactics and have infiltrated the ranks of the genuine protesters. We watched as a peaceful protest degenerated into a killing field. This is unacceptable.

"No responsible Nigerian or political party will ignore the infiltration of a peaceful and legitimate protest by hoodlums who have become so brazen to start robbing citizens even in broad daylight, harassing, looting, destroying property and even masterminding an attack on the Benin prison and forcing a jailbreak. We have no doubt that the people, who invaded the prison are not genuine #EndSARS protesters but criminal opportunists who used the freedom afforded the  protesters, by their inalienable fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution, to cause havoc and create mayhem.

"As we move forward, the unfortunate development in the #EndSARS movement in Benin City and indeed Edo State calls for caution. We call on the #EndSARS protesters not to allow the activities of these undesirable elements derail from the goal of the protest, which is to end all forms of brutality and harassment by the police and enforce a society where freedom and justice prevail.

"The fake #EndSARS protesters have unfortunately forced the hand of government into taking  measures such as declaring a 24 hour curfew effective 4pm today, Monday, October 19, 2020, in our state so that law and order can be restored. Edo Govt Declares 24-hour Curfew

Edo State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state till further notice. The curfew is to take effect from 4pm, October 19 to 4pm October 20, 2020.

In a press statement issued and signed by the Barr. Osariodion Ogie, Secretary to State Government said, "the decision has become necessary because of the very disturbing incidents of vandalism and attacks on private individuals and institutions by hoodlums in the guise of ENDSARS protesters.

The SSG said, "while the government of Edo State respects the rights of its citizens to undertake legitimate protests, it cannot sit idly when hoodlums have taken laws into their hands to cause mayhem on innocent citizens and the state."

"By the directive, schools and businesses are to shut down activities accordingly. Those who cannot move safely are to stay put between now and 4pm till calmness is restored.

"Parents are advised to rein in their children, youths and wards, to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

"The responsibility of government is to protect lives and property and maintain law and order, therefore, anyone found outside in violation of the curfew would be dealt with according to the law," the statement concluded.

 

Our Lady of Fatima College Institutes Award in Honor of Zakawanu

 Even in death, the former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Zakawanu Garuba, continues to be honoured.

The latest of such honours is the institution of an award of excellence to be given to the best graduating student of Our Lady of Fatima College, Auchi, his Alma mater.

This cheering news was disclosed by the Worldwide President of the School’s Old  Boy’s Association (OLOFOBA), Hon. Paschal Ugbome at the 60th Founders Day Anniversary of the Institution.

The low key anniversary celebration because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which held in the Auchi premises of the elite missionary institution, attracted a motley crowd of guests, in strict adherence to the  COVID-19 protocols.

 Announcing the birth of the Zakawanu Garuba Endowment Award to the best graduating student of the school, with an attached princely sum of Fifty Thousand Naira as cash prize, Hon. Ugbome said the award was in recognition of the late Speaker's contributions to the growth of the institution during his lifetime.

He said, "As an Exco, we wish to announce the institution of an award of excellence in honour of late Zakawanu Garuba. This award is to be presented to the best graduating student every year and it is in recognition of his commitment, deduction and contributions to the school as well as the Association whilst alive. It will carry a sum of N50, 000".

Hon. Ugbome noted the award is expected to spur the students to excel, while also ensuring that Olofobaites show sufficient dedication towards their Alma mater as well as the Association.

Our Lady of Fatima, Auchi, was established in 1960, same year Nigeria won her independence from her colonial masters. The Catholic Church, with support of the then Western regional government, of which Edo was part of, established the school to cater for the educational needs of the people. Since then, the school has churned out notable graduands who have impacted positively on the society

A particular event which brought the upscale school to national limelight occurred in 1977 when it won the top position in the All Secondary School football competition

 Following the controversial takeover of schools during the military regime, the school was renamed Otaru Grammar School, Auchi. It later reverted to its original name of Our Lady of Fatima when the state government decided to return missionary schools to their owners.

One of the saddest moments in the rich history of the school was in 1981 when, as a result of a communal conflict between two of its neighbouring communities, a  huge inferno, ostentibly sparked by unknown persons, engulfed and damaged the school facilities, reducing them to rubbles. Like a phoenix with nine lives, however, the school rose from the ashes and took its rightful place.

Some of the products of the school occupy vantage positions in diverse fields of human endeavours. Among the top Edo North politicians who are graduands of the school are Chief Dan Orbih, Hon Paschal Ugbome, late Zakawanu Garuba and Late Alhaji Chalton Mogaji.

 Others include seasoned technocrats and academicians such as Dr lmokuemeh; Head of Service, Edo State; Prof Eragbe, Vice Chancellor, Edo State University, iyamho; Profs Aluyor and Omogbai respectively.

The highlights of the ceremony was the commissioning of some projects donated by different Sets of the school.which includes, standard Olympic table tennis sets  by  98 set, washing hands sets ,white boards, 1993 set , renovations and replacements of iron doors, windows and white board's  98set, brand new world class basketball court  1982 set, presentations of books  87set and  lock up shops by Olofoba worldwide.

Edo Govt, Int’l Partners Intensify Reforestation Programme on 300ha in Ehor Forest Reserve

The Edo State Government in collaboration with International Partners, including Association Bernadette Strebel World Peace in Switzerland and the Africa Initiative for World Peace have intensified efforts on the state’s reforestation programme as about 300 hectares in Ehor Forest Reserve have been covered in a move to combat climate change and preserve endangered species.

The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s reforestation project is an extensive programme anchored on protecting and sustaining the state’s bio-resources, helping to tackle climate change, ensuring environmental sustainability and protecting the state’s unique biological ecosystem.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Forestry, Dr. Festus Onogholo, in a chat with journalists, said a lot of progress has been made on the reforestation project in Area BC 15/1 Ehor Forest Reserve, Ehor, Edo State, which is a critical step in achieving the government’s targets for environmental sustainability.

He said 400 hectares of land in Ehor was earmarked for the reforestation work in the area, where a lot of progress has been made, as about 300 hectares have been covered since the inception of the project.

According to him, “We had planted trees in 270 hectares and worked on an additional 28 hectares in 2020. We planted indigenous species of Opepe, white Afara and black Afara in the marked area. For exotic species, we planted teak and Gmelina. All of these were achieved in collaboration with our international partners on the project. We have 54 forestry workers paid to work on the project.”

He noted that the project would contribute to saving the world from climate change and protecting animals in the forest, as the area is a natural habitat for some white-throated monkeys and others.

Fresh Case of Alleged Murder Against Chief Johnson Atselegha Adjourned to 26th November, 2020

Edo State High Court, Criminal Court 1, Benin City has on Thursday, 26th October adjourned a fresh case of  murder against the  Iyatsere of Warri, Chief Johnson Atseleghe who is already facing alleged murdered case of the Okhaighele of Kolokolo Community, Mr. Sunny Etchie, Chief Johnson Atseleghe, the Iyasere of Warri  to November 26th 2020.

Atseleghe is the Iyatsere of Warri and leader of Itsekiri in oil-rich Ologbo Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The defendant, Johnson Atseleghe is being tried on a  murder of Okuomuose  Omorodion and Genesis Orji  in Ologbo Community in charge Seat No. B/CO/717M/20.

The offence contravened Section 324 of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 punishable under  the Criminal Code Act Cap. C38 and Section 2 (2) and punishable under Section 3 prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2013 of Edo State.

At the sitting on Thursday, the accused, Johnson Atseleghe was not present at the court and the prosecutor thereafter told the court that DPP advise is being awaited.

It would be recall that lawyer to Atseleghe in the last sitting  of Monday 14th September  told the court that Chief Atseleghe would be available in the court anytime he is needed.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Efe Ikponmwonba, however adjourned the case to November 26, 2020 for hearing awaiting the DPP advice.

Meanwhile, there was a mass  protest around the court premises by the Benin Solidarity Movement( BSM), and it's Ighele Edo Civil Defence/Security Services with  citizens of Ologbo Community demanding  that the case be transferred to another court, as they have lost confidence on the presiding judge, justice Efe Ikponmwonba. 

The protesters accused the judge, justice Efe Ikponmwonba of being compromised. One of the placards read,"WE NEED JUSTICE FOR SUNNY ETCHIE, the Okhaigele of Kolokolo Community." Killers should not be allowed to move freely in our society".

The protesters thereafter moved to the Edo State Police Command headquarters  to lay their complain. They also asked the Commissioner of police, Edo State to look into the alleged invitation, inviting the Onogie and some members of the community for questioning when they are fully aware that they are fighting for the people.

EDHA Recalls Okiye's Impeachment, Appoints Emma Okoduwa As Chief Whip

The Edo House of Assembly on Wednesday reversed the recent impeachment of the former Speaker, Francis Okiye, and commuted it to resignation.

The house also reversed the suspension slammed on Mr Okiye, who later joined the lawmakers during the plenary session.

The reversal of the impeachment followed a motion moved by the Leader of the house, Henry Okhuarobo, and seconded by Emmanuel Okoduwa, representing Esan North East 11.

Moving the motion, Mr Okhuarobo said the need to reverse the speaker’s impeachment followed appeals from their constituents.

Consequently, the motion, which received the overwhelming support of the members, was adopted by the house.

The Speaker, Marcus Onobun, told journalists shortly after the plenary session that there was no rift between the house and the executive arm of government.

In a reaction, the former speaker said he was pleased that the house reversed its decision on him.

He expressed his readiness to work with the present leadership for the good of his constituency.

Meanwhile, Honourable Emmanuel Okoduwa has been appointed the Chief Whip of the house.

Edo ADP Disowns Iboi Emmanuel

The leadership of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at the Local Government and Ward levels in Edo State has condemned the decision of the party governorship candidate in the just concluded Edo gubernatorial election, Mr Iboi Emmanuel challenging the eligibility of the candidacy of Governor Godwin Obaseki at the tribunal.

The party position was contained in a  communiqué issued after a stakeholders meeting which took place at the party secretariat in Benin.

According to the communique signed by Chief Great Omoruyi, Uhunmwode LGA Party Chairman and Mr. Joseph Imarhiagbe, Egor Ward 1 Chairman for and on behalf of LGA Party Chairmen and Ward Chairmen respectively, condemned in strong terms the decision of Iboi Emmanuel to approach the Edo Election Petition Tribunal seeking the nullification of the election of Governor Godwin  Obaseki.

"We viewed this action very seriously against Mr. Iboi Emmanuel as the party never contemplated tribunal option at any of its meeting after the election.

"We also wish to pass a Vote of Implicit Confidence in the leadership quality of our most respected State Chairman, Mr. Gabriel Oloruntobi, who has piloted the affairs of the party with little or nothing to this enviable level.

"We hope the National Secretariat of our great party will see reasons with our position and allow peace to reign in the party in the state," the statement opined.

Frank Okiye Impeached as EDHA Speaker

Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has wondered why the gold in Zamfara is not a national cake like the oil in Rivers State.

Speaking to news men in Port Hacourt, Wike who was reacting to the news of CBN demanding for N5b gold from the Zamfara government wondered if same gesture can be allowed in his state.

As monitored by our team, Wike stated that he is looking forth to having a gold well in Zamfara soon.

According to the governor, "Since the discovery of oil in our region, we are meant to believe  that it is a national cake. Even imams in the North have oil wells in my state and neighboring states.

"Our land are spilled as a result of this oil yet there are no plans by the federal government to clean up our devastated lands.

"We are given 13%  of something in our backyard which God blessed us with...

"To my greatest surprise, I saw the news of  CBN demanding for N5b gold from the Zamfara state government.

"So the Zamfara government are managing it but in my own region, many northerners are oil well owners.

"I am looking forth to having a gold well in Zamfara state soon since it's all about mineral resources in our country. Not only me but people of my state.

"If this is not allowed, then let it be known that it is an injustice against us and we will know what to do going further," he concluded.
